Villagers Protest in Rendadi Over Burial Site Issues After Severe Rainfall

Villagers in Rendadi, Tamil Nadu protest after a buried body resurfaces post heavy rains. Temporary burial sites are allocated with promises for a permanent solution soon.

Villagers Protest in Rendadi Over Burial Site Issues After Severe Rainfall

Ranipet (Tamil Nadu), Nov 3: A distressing incident unfolded in Rendadi village, when a body buried along the riverbanks reemerged in a nearby lake just two days after its burial. This incident has spurred the villagers to protest with the body, demanding the establishment of a proper burial ground.

The villagers expressed their frustration about the absence of a designated burial ground, which forces them to bury bodies along the riverbank. The significant rainfall in the region exacerbated this issue, leading to the recent incident.

In response, Sholinghur Tehsildar, R. Selvi, addressed the situation, noting that a temporary site at a higher elevation has been assigned to the village for burials to prevent future flooding issues. Selvi explained that Rendadi is a small village of fewer than 400 families, primarily from the Arunthathiyar community, and that heavy rains have intensified the existing burial challenges.

She reassured the villagers that steps are being taken to secure a permanent burial site. "We are exploring options for suitable land, and if necessary, will consider private land if community land, or 'poromboke,' is insufficient. The matter should be resolved within a couple weeks," she affirmed.
