'Relived my trauma': Bilkis Bano on release of 11 men convicted of raping her

Bilkis Bano, a survivor of 2002 Gujarat riots, only had questions and a request as she spoke after the 11 men who were convicted of raping her and murdering her family members were released from Gujarat’s Godhra jail.

Speaking to NDTV, Bano said that trauma of the past 20 years washed over her again when she heard that the 11 men who devastated her family and took her 3-year-old daughter away from her had walked free.

She questioned how justice for any woman can end in this manner. Bano added that the release of these convicts had taken away her peace and shaken her faith in justice.

Saying that nobody asked her before taking such a big decision, she appealed Gujarat govt to undo the harm and give her back her right to live without fear and in peace.

All the eleven convicts sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2002 post-Godhra Bilkis Bano gang rape and murder of seven members of her family on Monday walked out of Godhra sub-jail after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy.

Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was raped while fleeing the violence that broke out post the Sabarmati train incident in Godhra.
