Ranchi Prepares for Annual Rath Yatra with Strict Security

Ranchi, Jun 27 (PTI) Lord Jagannath's chariot, along with goddess Subhadra and Lord Balbhadra, is set to embark on its annual nine-day journey to Mausi Bari in Ranchi, Jharkhand this Friday evening. The event will take place amidst tight security measures.

The deities' chariots will start their procession around 4:30 pm from the Jagannath temple in Dhurwa, following traditional rituals. Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Chief Minister Hemant Soren have extended their wishes in celebration of the Rath Yatra.

"Heartfelt greetings to all devotees on the sacred occasion of Rath Yatra. May Lord Jagannath bless this auspicious journey to bring happiness, prosperity, and peace to everyone's lives," Governor Gangwar posted on X.

Chief Minister Soren also shared his wishes on X, stating, "May Lord Jagannath bless everyone with good health, happiness, peace, and prosperity." The Ranchi administration has arranged extensive security for the thousands of devotees expected to visit the 17th-century shrine, located atop Jagannathpur hills, for darshan.

The tradition in Ranchi, patterned after Puri, was initiated by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo of the Barkagarh princely state in 1691.

Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri reviewed the security and preparedness on Thursday. He directed officials to ensure the smooth experience for devotees during the Rath Yatra.

This year's Rath Yatra celebration will run from June 27 to July 5 in Ranchi, with a 10-day fair accompanying it. The administration has imposed a complete ban on the use of plastics for the duration of the fair.

Stall operators and shopkeepers must comply with the order, using biodegradable options such as leaf-based items, bamboo baskets, and paper products, according to an official.

Ranchi's Senior Superintendent of Police, Chandan Kumar Sinha, mentioned stringent security measures, including watchtowers and CCTV cameras within the fair's premises.

Magistrates and police officers have been deployed at key locations to ensure safety. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner confirmed adequate arrangements for electricity supply, mobile toilets, drinking water, fire tenders, and ambulances.
