Rajya Sabha Adjourned Amid Opposition Protests Over Rejected Notices

New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) — The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were adjourned on Monday until 2 PM following protests by Opposition members over the rejection of their 19 adjournment notices concerning various issues.

Shortly after the House convened at 11 AM, Deputy Chairman Harivansh made an obituary reference to former Manipur governor La Ganesan, before scheduled papers and reports were laid on the table of the House.

The Deputy Chairman noted that 19 notices were received under Rule 267, encompassing four topics.

He stated that 11 of the notices lacked a "motion drawn in proper terms," 10 notices failed to mention the date, 11 did not specify which rules the members sought to suspend, and 13 sought discussion on "a matter which is subjudice."

"Since none of these notices adhere to the requirements of the rules, I am not admitting any of them," stated the Deputy Chairman.

Harivansh then attempted to proceed with the scheduled Zero Hour.

Opposition MPs, advocating for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, stood in protest against the Chair's dismissal of their 19 notices relating to varying matters.

The Deputy Chairman requested the protesting members to permit the House to function. However, the Opposition did not concede, leading to the adjournment of proceedings until 2 PM.
