Satish Kumar's Tenure as Railway Board Chairman Extended

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI) The government has extended the tenure of Satish Kumar as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board for one more year. His term, initially set to conclude on August 31, 2025, has now been extended.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet issued an order on August 27, 2025, confirming this decision. According to the order, the extension, which comes into effect from September 1, 2025, is on a re-employment contract basis under existing terms and conditions or until further instructions. Satish Kumar marked history as the first chairman and CEO from the scheduled castes category when he was appointed on September 1, 2024.

Officials have praised Kumar, from the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), for his substantial contributions to Indian Railways over his 34-year career. Joining Indian Railways in March 1988, Kumar has undertaken various significant roles, pioneering innovations and enhancing efficiency and safety within the railway system. Kumar’s diverse postings included the Jhansi Division of the former Central Railway, Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi, North Eastern Railway, Patiala Locomotive Works, Lucknow Division of Northern Railway, Jaipur Division of North Western Railway, and the North Central Railway.

Among Kumar's notable achievements is the development of the Fog Safe Device, which has proven vital in ensuring safe train operations during foggy weather, as emphasized by officials. Prior to his role as Chairman and CEO, Kumar served as the Member, Traction and Rolling Stock (MTRS), a significant position overseeing traction and rolling stock for Indian Railways.
