Punjab Police cracks down on corruption, dismisses 52 officers, introduces e-FIR facility

In line with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s directive to uphold transparency, accountability, and integrity in public service, Punjab Police has taken strict action against officers involved in corruption, malpractice, and absenteeism.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced on Wednesday that 52 police officials, including one Inspector, five Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs), four Head Constables (HCs), and 42 Constables, have been dismissed across various districts.

During a press conference at Punjab Police Headquarters, DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that Commissioners of Police (CPs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) have been actively identifying officers facing criminal charges, allegations, or involvement in corrupt practices.

"Officers are thoroughly examining evidence and following due legal procedure in each case," he said.

Recently, an SHO from Sadiq and two constables in Faridkot were arrested for extortion, reinforcing the department’s strict stance against corruption.

DGP Yadav reaffirmed, "Black sheep in the Punjab Police will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken as per the law."

Punjab Police to Introduce E-FIR Facility

DGP Yadav also announced Punjab Police’s upcoming initiative to introduce an e-FIR facility for motor vehicle theft. This will allow citizens to register FIRs online or at SAANJH Kendras without visiting a police station.

An e-Police Station is being established at the state level, and the department will seek approval from the High Court to introduce E-Courts in each district.

“The e-FIR project aims to reduce direct public-police interaction while ensuring citizen-friendly services through technology," he said. Currently, Punjab Police provides 43 online services under the SAANJH project.

Additionally, Punjab Police, in collaboration with the Indian Police Foundation, has launched an Internal Police Reforms project, making Punjab the first state to undertake such an initiative. Initially rolled out in SAS Nagar and Rupnagar, it is now expanding to Fatehgarh Sahib and Khanna.

The project focuses on enhancing complaint registration, improving police response and conduct, minimizing harassment, and strengthening community engagement.
