Punjab minister Jauramajra inaugurates treated water-based irrigation projects

Punjab's Water Resources and Soil & Water Conservation Minister, S. Chetan Singh Jouramajra, inaugurated two treated water-based irrigation projects in Talwandi Bhai and Zira, with capacities of 4 MLD and 8 MLD, respectively.

These initiatives will provide irrigation water to 556 hectares, benefiting around 360 farmer households. Emphasizing the government's commitment to supporting the farming community, Jouramajra highlighted the ongoing efforts to restore canal water-based field channels and promote surface water-based irrigation, reducing reliance on groundwater.

He stressed the significance of utilizing treated water for irrigation, turning what would have been waste into a valuable resource for agriculture. Punjab has taken a lead in implementing organized treated water usage, with 60 such projects using 340 MLD already commissioned. The government aims to scale this up to 600 MLD by the next crop season, benefiting over 25,000 hectares. Jouramajra urged farmers to adopt efficient irrigation techniques and conserve water. Responding to media queries, he disclosed the government's commitment to water conservation, citing a recent MoU with a private industry contributing to the state's water conservation sector.
