Punjab Closes Educational Institutes Amid Severe Rainfall

Punjab shuts educational institutes till Sep 3 due to heavy rains. Education Minister Bains emphasizes hostel admin obligations. Flooding impacts several districts.

Punjab Closes Educational Institutes Amid Severe Rainfall

Chandigarh, Sep 1 (PTI) - The Punjab government announced on Monday that all colleges, universities, and polytechnic institutes in the state will remain closed until September 3 due to heavy rainfall.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains stated on X that continuous heavy rainfall since last night has prompted the closure.

The minister also emphasized that the well-being of students residing in hostels is the responsibility of their respective administrations, urging everyone to adhere to guidelines issued by local authorities.

The decision follows the state government's earlier extension of school closures until September 3, amidst ongoing flooding in Punjab.

Initially, holidays were declared for all schools from August 27 to August 30.

Rainfall has persisted in several districts of Punjab since Sunday night.

The state is currently experiencing severe flooding due to swollen Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, along with seasonal rivulets affected by heavy rains in their catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

The districts most impacted by the floods include Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar.
