Protests Erupt Over Alleged Gang Rape at Kolkata Law College

Kolkata, June 30 (PTI) - Tensions flared outside the South Calcutta Law College as supporters of the BJP and its youth wing, BJYM, engaged in a confrontational scuffle with workers of the Left and its allied organisations on Monday. The clash occurred during a visit by a four-member fact-finding team from the BJP to the college, the site of an alleged gang rape involving a student last week. Police struggled to manage the agitated groups who were protesting the alleged gang rape, reportedly committed by a college alumnus and two senior students. The BJP, along with its youth and student wings, organized rallies across various parts of Kolkata and West Bengal demanding justice for the alleged crime. The CPI(M)’s student wing, SFI, also took to the streets, holding a protest rally at College Street near the Calcutta University main campus. Meanwhile, ABVP supporters, who are associated with the RSS, staged protests in front of the South Calcutta Law College and the Kasba police station, which has jurisdiction over the area. The survivor of the alleged incident claimed she was gang-raped on June 25 inside the college. Following her complaint, the police apprehended Manojit Mishra, an alumnus, along with students Promit Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed. A college guard was also taken into custody by the authorities on Saturday morning. The BJP's youth wing, BJYM, held additional protest rallies at Esplanade, as well as in Siliguri and Balurghat, which is in the constituency of the saffron party's West Bengal unit president, Sukanta Majumdar, in north Bengal.
