Powai Lake in Mumbai Overflows Due to Heavy Rainfall

Mumbai, June 18 (PTI) The picturesque Powai Lake in Mumbai reached overflow status on Wednesday morning due to continuous heavy rainfall in its catchment areas over the past two days, according to a civic official. Its water is not suitable for drinking but serves industrial needs.

With a storage capacity of 545 crore litres, the lake began overflowing at 6 a.m., the official confirmed. "The lake has reached its full capacity and has started overflowing owing to the heavy rainfall experienced over the last two days in its catchment regions," the official noted, adding that the current water level stands at 195.10 feet.

This recreational water body, encircled by lush greenery and high-rises in Powai, has begun overflowing 20 days earlier than it did last year. When at full capacity, the water surface area spans approximately 2.23 square kilometres, while the catchment area covers 6.61 square kilometres.

Situated 27 km from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters, Powai Lake was constructed in 1890 with an expenditure of Rs 12.59 lakh.

In Mumbai, seven reservoirs—Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar, and Tulsi—collectively supply 385 crore litres of potable water to the city.
