 A section of Shiv Sena parliamentarians on Friday asked party chief Uddhav Thackeray to mend fences with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde amid claims by BJP leaders that at least a dozen Lok Sabha members of the rebellion-hit party were in touch with them.
A central BJP minister claimed that the split in the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra will also have an impact in the Lok Sabha as at least a dozen Lok Sabha members of the party, out of the total 19, were ready to switch sides.
A meeting of Shiv Sena MPs, convened by Thackeray in Mumbai on Friday evening, saw suggestions being made even by a party veteran to patch up with the rebel group led by Shinde in the long-term interests of the party, Sena sources said.
Thackeray's response to the suggestions was not immediately known.
The meeting was not attended by three lawmakers - Shrikant Shinde, the son of the new chief minister; Bhawana Gawli, who is under the scanner of Enforcement Directorate; and Rajan Vichare, the Lok Sabha member from Thane, the sources said.
Shiv Sena has 19 members in the Lok Sabha and three members in the Rajya Sabha.
Shinde's son Shrikant, a two-term Lok Sabha member from Kalyan, has already joined ranks with his father, while five-term parliamentarian from Yavatmal Bhawana Gawli had written a letter to the then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray urging him to consider the grievances of the rebels with regard to Hindutva.  Rajan Vichare, the Lok Sabha member from Thane, was mentored by the late Anand Dighe like Shinde.
Gawli has been under the radar of the Enforcement Directorate over allegations of money laundering connected with a non-governmental organisation run by her.
Thirty-five-year-old Shrikant, who was with the rebel MLAs in Goa, was not available for comments.  A section of the Lok Sabha members was in a quandary as several MLAs in their constituencies had sided with Shinde and were apprehensive of financial support for development projects under the new dispensation.
"There has been no impact of the rebellion on the Shiv Sena parliamentary party," Vinayak Raut, leader of the Shiv Sena in the Lok Sabha, told PTI before the meeting with Thackeray.
Lok Sabha member from Osmanabad Omraje Nimbalkar too said he was firmly with Thackeray and would cast his vote in the July 18 presidential elections according to the directions of the Shiv Sena chief.
"The split is in the Shiv Sena legislature party, why do you want to drag the Parliamentary unit into this," a Sena Lok Sabha member from Vidarbha region asked.
The Rajya Sabha members are Anil Desai, Sanjay Raut and Priyanka Chaturvedi, all considered close to the Thackerays.

In a letter to Shinde, who was sworn in as Maharashtra Chief Minister a day earlier, Thackeray accused him of "indulging in anti-party activities".
Shinde has also "voluntarily" given up the membership of the party, therefore "in exercise of powers vested in me as Shiv Sena party president, I remove you from the post of Shiv Sena leader in the party organisation," said the letter.
The letter is dated June 30, the day Shinde took oath as chief minister with BJP's Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy.
Thackeray, who headed a coalition government of Sena, NCP and Congress, stepped down as Chief Minister on June 29 after the Supreme Court refused to stay the floor test ordered by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. With 39 out of 55 Sena MLAs being part of Shinde's camp, it was apparent that the government had lost its majority.
The Sena had earlier sought disqualification of 16 rebel MLAs, and also removed Shinde as the party's leader in the Assembly. The Shinde camp, on the other hand, claimed that as they had majority, their group was the real Shiv Sena in the legislature.
The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear on July 11 the plea of Shiv Sena chief whip Sunil Prabhu seeking suspension from assembly of Shinde and 15 rebel MLAs against whom disqualification pleas are pending.
After Shinde was sworn in as the chief minister, Prabhu moved the top court seeking his suspension and of 15 rebels on various grounds, alleging that they are “acting as pawns of the BJP, thereby committing the constitutional sin of defection.”

There was nothing unexpected about Devendra Fadnavis becoming Deputy Chief Minister in the new government in Maharashtra, state BJP president Chandrakant Patil said on Friday.
"I am aware that many people were shocked by the events yesterday. But there was nothing unexpected in what happened with Devendra Fadnavis," Patil told reporters here.
"BJP decided to support Shinde for CM's post for taking the Hindutva ideology ahead. But Shinde himself asked Fadnavis to join his cabinet. So Fadnavis asked our leaders in Delhi for permission," he said.
In a dramatic sequence of events a day before, Fadnavis, a former chief minister, announced that rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde would be the next CM while he would stay out of the government. But later, he took oath as Shinde's deputy.
"You need a truly large heart to work under a person who was your junior earlier," Patil said, praising Fadnavis.
Shinde was a minister when Fadnavis headed the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance government in the state from 2014 to 2019.

In a statement after the Supreme Court's observations against Sharma, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the court has strengthened the party's resolve to fight "destructively divisive ideologies".
"The court has very rightly called out the BJP spokesperson for being 'single-handedly responsible for igniting emotions across the country', and that she should apologise to the entire nation," Ramesh said.
"These remarks by the Supreme Court, which resonate with the entire country, should make the party in power hang its head in shame," he also said.
The Supreme Court slammed Sharma for her "disturbing" remark against Prophet Mohammad and said it led to unfortunate incidents and ignited emotions across the country.
Sharma's remark against the Prophet, made during the course of a TV debate, triggered protests across the country and invited sharp reactions from many Gulf countries. The BJP had subsequently suspended her from the party.
Ramesh said the Supreme Court has held a mirror to this government and called out the "base ugliness" of its actions.
"It is no secret that the BJP seeks to profit from inflaming communal passions. Today, the Supreme Court has strengthened the resolve in every single one of us who are fighting these destructively divisive ideologies," the Congress leader.

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has triggered yet another storm by naming the next vice-chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University (RBU), even as a bill nominating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, with whose government he shares an acrimonious relation, as the chancellor of the state-run varsities awaits his mandatory nod. The governor is the current chancellor of the state-run universities by dint of his office and the term of the current RBU vice-chancellor Sabyasachi Basu Roy Choudhury is set to be over soon.
Dhankhar has appointed Mahua Mukherjee, professor in the department of dance of RBU as its next vice-chancellor.
He tweeted on Thursday that he has appointed Mukherjee as the next VC in terms of section 9(1)(b) of the Rabindra Bharati Act, 1981.
The governor also attached a recommendation of the government search committee for the post and said that he was choosing Mukherjee, whose name topped the list. Reacting strongly, TMC state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The governor has once again proved he does not believe in democratic principles and federalism." "While his consent is awaited for the bill passed by West Bengal Assembly appointing the chief minister as chancellor of the state universities, the hon'ble governor hastily announced a name as the VC of RBU. He did not bother to take into confidence the education minister and chief minister before the announcement. He is exceeding his brief," Ghosh said.
While Basu Roy Choudhury could not be contacted, a source close to him he was not willing for any extension of his tenure.

In their first cabinet meeting held hours after coming to power, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis took the first step towards overturning the previous Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government's decision of relocating the proposed Mumbai Metro Line-3 car shed from Aarey Colony.
During the meeting held here on Thursday evening, soon after the swearing-in ceremony, Fadnavis directed the state Advocate General and the administration to submit a proposal on building the Metro-3 car shed in Aarey Colony instead of Kanjurmarg.
Incidentally, Shinde's predecessor Uddhav Thackeray, immediately after becoming the chief minister in November 2019, had announced a stay on the construction of the proposed Metro-3 car shed in Aarey Colony.
The decision to set up the car shed in the wooded Aarey area had faced opposition from environmental groups as it entailed cutting down hundreds of trees. The Thackeray government had later shifted the site to Kanjurmarg, but it is embroiled in a legal dispute.
Shinde was on Thursday sworn in as the 20th chief minister of Maharashtra, while Fadnavis took oath as the deputy chief minister, just 24 hours after the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Thackeray.
During the cabinet meeting, Fadnavis also directed the state administration to revive the Jalyukt Shivar Scheme, which was discontinued by the Thackeray government on charges of corruption. This water conservation scheme was Fadnavis government's flagship programme.
Fadnavis asked the advocate general to represent the government's side of building the car shed in Aarey Colony.
Officials in the urban development department said the matter is currently in the court and the next hearing will be held 15 days later.
The advocate general was asked how can the project be shifted to Aarey Colony as the previous MVA government had proposed to shift the car shed to Kanjurmarg and designated Aarey Colony as a reserve forest, they said.
Fadnavis told the officials that the 33-km-long Colaba-Bandra-Seepz underground Metro project is getting delayed due to the court case.
Meanwhile, the NCP objected to the new government's proposal to shift the Metro car shed to Aarey Colony.
In a tweet, NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto said, "With so many important issues that need to be looked into in Maharashtra, what does the new Dy. CM Devendra Fadnavis do? He proposes to move Metro car shed back to Aarey. Re-creating a problem solved by MVA Govt. Green lung of Mumbai in danger once again. What will he gain?"

Shinde flew to Goa from Mumbai and arrived at the hotel located at Dona Paula near here around 1.30 am.
The Maharashtra legislators have been camping at the hotel since Wednesday night after their arrival from Guwahati. While Shinde had arrived with them, he went to Mumbai on Thursday and was sworn in as the 20th chief minister of Maharashtra, while BJP stalwart Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the deputy chief minister.
When Shinde returned to the hotel after the swearing-in ceremony, the rebel Sena MLAs and independent legislators were seen hugging him and raising slogans in his support. They also raised slogans hailing Sena founder Bal Thackeray and late party leader Anand Dighe.
A few women legislators, who are also part of the faction, welcomed him with traditional rituals.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who was also at the hotel when Shinde arrived, offered a bouquet of flowers to congratulate the latter.

Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that he was unaware if any MLAs from Maharashtra were staying at a hotel in the capital city. Sarma said that there are "many good hotels in Assam" and people are free to visit and stay. He said that MLAs of other states can also visit the northeast state.
Interestingly, the Assam CM had visited the hotel where the Shiv Sena rebels are staying. However, Sarma had left the hotel before the rebels checked in on 22 June.

 Rebel Shiv Sena MLAs who support Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde returned to Mumbai from Goa on Saturday evening on the eve of a special two-day session of the state legislature which will see election for the post of Assembly Speaker as well as a floor test of the new government.
They were escorted back to Mumbai from Goa by Ekanth Shinde, the leader of the rebel faction. 
The MLAs were camping at a starred hotel in Dona Paula since June 29 after flying to Goa from Guwahati. Many of them had left Maharashtra on June 21 along with Shinde.
In Mumbai, security had been tightened at the airport to avoid any untoward incident in the wake of the recent violent protests against rebel MLAs by Shiv Sena cadres in some parts of the state.
On Wednesday, Thackeray resigned as chief minister after the Supreme Court refused to stay the floor test ordered by the governor and it became apparent that Shinde had support of the majority of Sena MLAs.
Shinde took oath as CM the next day with BJP's Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy.
The post of Assembly Speaker has been lying vacant since Nana Patole of Congress resigned in February 2021 to become his party's state unit president. Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal was officiating as acting Speaker in the meantime.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar, meanwhile, said there would be a long legal battle ahead for deciding which faction of the Shiv Sena would be considered as the `original' party.
"The court will have final say is what I feel,” he told reporters in Pune.
On Friday, Uddhav Thackeray, who heads the Sena, removed Shinde as `Shiv Sena leader' for "anti-party activities". MLA Deepak Kesarkar, a Shinde supporter, said the chief minister will challenge the decision in a court. Earlier, Thackeray had appointed Ajay Chaudhary as the party's group leader in Assembly, replacing Shinde, which was approved by acting Speaker Zirwal.
On the other hand, several Independent MLAs who support Shinde also moved a motion of no-confidence against Zirwal.
Pawar claimed that the no confidence motion "does not restrict him (Zirwal) from serving the office" and he can still perform the duty of acting Speaker.
The Shiv Sena on Saturday said Fadnavis, a former chief minister, taking oath as deputy CM was a "shocking climax" to the drama of political instability in the state, and questioned the BJP why it did not show a "big heart" by honouring the pact of rotational CM in 2019 when the Sena had demanded the CM's post for two and a half years.

With an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP on Saturday announced a host of new activities, including 'Har Ghar Tiranga' programme to unify people and a reachout to beneficiaries of government schemes.
The decision to step up its outreach activities and strengthen the organisation at the booth level was taken at the BJP's office-bearers meeting here before the start of its national executive.
It was also informed that two resolutions -- one political and the other on economic and welfare of the poor -- will be passed in the national executive meeting.
Besides, the party will also issue a statement on the political situation in Telangana.
Briefing reporters, party vice president Vasundhara Raje said all important issues and prevailing political environment will be discussed at the national executive meeting.
It will be decided in the executive meeting which topics are to be considered, she said.
She was replying to a question whether discussions will be held on the Udaipur killing in which a person was hacked to death by men and the row over suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma's derogatory comments about Prophet Mohammad.
The office-bearers meeting discussed outlines of the new organisational activities, including 'har ghar tiranga' (Tri-colour at every home) exercise to reach 20 crore people which, Raje added, will unify the country.
Describing booth workers as the foundation of BJP, Raje said the party has decided to have 200 active workers on every polling booth, have Whatsapp groups of booth level workers and make 'Panna pramukhs' more organised.
The party's organisational and outreach activities will be reviewed at the booth level on weekly basis, she added.
Raje also informed that the party will reach out to 30 crore beneficiaries of various government schemes.
BJP president JP Nadda will deliver his address the inaugural session of the party's national executive. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also reached here to attend the meeting.

It was also informed that two resolutions -- one political and the other on economic and welfare of the poor -- will be passed in the national executive meeting.
Besides, the party will also issue a statement on the political situation in Telangana.
Briefing reporters, party vice president Vasundhara Raje said all important issues and prevailing political environment will be discussed at the national executive meeting.
It will be decided in the executive meeting which topics are to be considered, she said.
She was replying to a question whether discussions will be held on the Udaipur killing in which a person was hacked to death by men and the row over suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma's derogatory comments about Prophet Mohammad.

The office-bearers meeting discussed outlines of the new organisational activities, including 'har ghar tiranga' (Tri-colour at every home) exercise to reach 20 crore people which, Raje added, will unify the country.
Describing booth workers as the foundation of BJP, Raje said the party has decided to have 200 active workers on every polling booth, have Whatsapp groups of booth level workers and make 'Panna pramukhs' more organised.
The party's organisational and outreach activities will be reviewed at the booth level on weekly basis, she added.
Raje also informed that the party will reach out to 30 crore beneficiaries of various government schemes.
BJP president JP Nadda will deliver his address the inaugural session of the party's national executive. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also reached here to attend the meeting.

The Congress on Saturday alleged that one of the main accused in the brutal killing of a tailor in Udaipur is a "BJP member" and asked whether the Centre had moved quickly to transfer the case to the NIA due to this reason.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters here, party's media department head Pawan Khera said a very sensational disclosure has been made by a media group in connection with the Udaipur incident which pointed to the BJP links with Riyaz Attari.
Some reports have also referred to the accused as Riaz Akhtari.
"The killer of Kanhaiya Lal, Riyaz Attari is a member of the BJP," Khera said in a tweet after the press conference.
Earlier in the day, responding to a tweet by a Congress leader referring to one of the accused's alleged BJP links, BJP's IT cell chief Amit Malviya dismissed the claim as "fake news".
"I am not surprised that you are peddling #FakeNews. The Udaipur murderers WERN'T members of the BJP. Their attempt to infiltrate was like the LTTE assassin's attempt to enter the Congress to kill Rajiv Gandhi," he tweeted.
"Congress should stop fooling around with terror and national security," Malviya said.
Tailor Kanhaiya Lal was killed Tuesday afternoon by two cleaver-wielding men, who posted a grisly video of the crime online claiming responsibility for the murder.
The two accused, Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad, have been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
At the presser, Khera cited pictures and posts linking Attari with BJP leaders -- Irshad Chainwala and Mohammad Tahir.
"It has also come to the fore in the same disclosure that the main accused Riyaz Attari often participated in the programmes of Rajasthan BJP leader and former minister Gulabchand Kataria," he alleged.
"Not only this, pictures of the main accused Riyaz Attari attending the meetings of the BJP's Rajasthan minority unit are also in front of the world," Khera claimed.
Through the posts of BJP leader Irshad Chainwala on Facebook on November 30, 2018, and Mohammad Tahir on February 3, 2019, October 27, 2019, August 10, 2021, November 28, 2019, and other posts, it is clear that Attari was not only "close to BJP leaders", but was also an active member of the BJP, Khera alleged.
Questioning the "silence" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the Congress leader asked whether the Bharatiya Janata Party and its leaders are trying to create an atmosphere of religious frenzy in the country.
"Is the Bharatiya Janata Party, through its spokespersons and leaders, trying to take advantage by polarising the country," he asked.
Khera said Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had welcomed the transfer of this case to the NIA.
However, in light of "new facts", the question that arises is whether the BJP-led government at the Centre moved quickly to transfer the case to the NIA due to these reasons, he said.
