Varun Gandhi blasts Kangana Ranaut. Here's how he has become BJP's in-house critic

BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Thursday trained guns at his party's and PM Narendra Modi's most ardent fan, Kangana Ranaut.

Hitting out at the actor for describing India's Independence in 1947 as 'bheek', the MP from Pilibhit asked: "should I call this thinking madness or treason?".

Kangana, who is known for her incendiary and controversial remarks, told Times Now news channel that India's Independence in 1947 was not freedom but "bheek" or a handout. "And we got real freedom in 2014," she said in reference to Narendra Modi becoming PM.

Varun Gandh slammed Kangana in a tweet saying she has insulted freedom fighters with her comment.

Slamming her, Varun Gandhi tweeted in Hindi, "Insulting the sacrifice of Mahatma Gandhi sometimes, praising his killer sometimes, and now the disdain for the sacrifices of Mangal Pandey, Rani Laxmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and lakhs of freedom fighters. Should I call this thinking madness or treason?"

Varun Gandhi lately has been criticising his party's handling of the farmers issue. Matters came to a head when he raised voice for the farmers after the Lakhimpur Kheri killings. Tweeting a video of killings, Varun demanded justice in the case where union minister Ajay Mishra's son is an accused.

The BJP dumped him and his mother Maneka Gandhi from the national executive for speaking out in support of other farmers and protests against the centre's new laws.

He also been supporting the farmers demand for a legal guarantee on MSP.

In no mood to back down, Varun needled the party by stating that he never attended any national executive meet in years that he was part of the body.

To further poke the BJP, Varun tweeted an old video of BJP veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee speaking in support of farmers and asking the then govt to stop targeting them.

Varun Gandhi has also been targeting the Yogi Adityanath government over fertiliser shortage and floods in parts of UP. Tweeting images of people in distress due to flood in Terai region, Gandhi had asked where is governance. It was seen as a direct attack on CM Yogi Adityanath ahead of the state polls.

And it's not just the farmers issue. In 2017, Varun Gandhi had defied party line by advocating asylum to Rohingya Muslim refugees. Even then, he was rebuked by the party, which deems Rohingyas as security threat.

Varun Gandhi and his mother joined the BJP in 2004 but are believed to have fallen out of favour with the leadership in recent years.
