Tripura Election: poll official 'defaced PM Modi's poster' says BJP; suspended by EC

An election official in poll-bound Tripura has been suspended for allegedly defacing a poster of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The ruling BJP had earlier complained to the Election Commission about officials allegedly defacing posters and hoardings in public places, instead of removing them.

The accused sector officer in the Sabroom constituency went beyond the model code of conduct, the Additional Chief Electoral Officer said on 24 January 2023. "It appears that the sector officer went beyond the model code of conduct and applied black colour on a poster inside a private shop," ACEO UJ Mog said in a letter to the district magistrate of South Tripura.

"Therefore, it is decided that the officer shall be put under suspension and disciplinary proceedings shall be initiated against him as per the relevant rules," he added.

Tripura is slated to vote on 16 February and results will be announced on 2 March.
