Section 144 imposed, large gatherings banned in Patna over teachers' protests

Section 144 has been imposed in three areas of Patna following protests by hundreds of Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) qualified candidates over delay in their appointment.

The prohibitory order which bans unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapons, has been imposed in Gandhi Maidan, JP Golambar and the Dak bungalow roundabout which emerged as the centre of Monday's protest.

Candidates who passed the Bihar Teacher Eligibility Test (BTET) and Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) in 2019 were among the protesters demanding that the primary teachers' recruitment notification be issued.

On Monday, police resorted to lathi-charge and the use of water cannons to disperse protesters. A video of an official brutally thrashing a young demonstrator holding the tricolour went viral.

However, Patna District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh claimed that 'mild force' was used by the police to control crowd. He also said that the protesters included workers of the Jan Adhikar Party, who were trying to proceed towards the Raj Bhavan--the official residence of the governor.
