Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stares at a possible disqualification as a member of Parliament after being held guilty of defamation for a 2019 comment.

A Surat court has sentenced the Wayanad MP to prison for 2 years and according to the Representation of the People Act, a person sentenced to imprisonment of two years or more shall be disqualified "from the date of such conviction" and remain disqualified for another six years after serving time.

Gandhi's sentence has however been suspended for 30 days to enable him to file an appeal against the verdict.
