Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Appeal for CBI probe & other developments

The Lakhimpur Kheri violence in which eight people, including four farmers were killed has left the country shaken and led to an uproar among opposition. The unrest is yet to die down even as the UP government announced compensation for the families of those dead as well as the injured and CM Adityanath ordered a probe into the incident

Uttar Pradesh lawyers have appealed to the Chief Justice seeking an investigation by the CBI under the supervision of the Supreme Court into the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Lawyers asked Chief Justice NV Ramana to direct the Home Ministry to ensure the filing of a First Information Report and punishment for ministers involved in Sunday's incident.

Priyanka Gandhi said she was arrested "illegally" in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur when she was headed to Lakhimpur where eight people, including four farmers, were killed on Sunday

Earlier in the day, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel began a sit-in outside Lucknow airport as he was stopped by the state police when he was on his way to meet Priyanka Gandhi.

Sanjay Raut has said will meet Rahul Gandhi, highlighting the need for a joint opposition against the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.

An injured protester, Tejinder Virk alleged that Union Minister Ajay Mishra's son Ashish was driving the car that ran over farmers. Meanwhile, Ashish Misra, son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Misra, on Tuesday denied being on the site where the clash took place, saying at that time he was attending a dangal event where around 2-3000 people were present.

The families of three farmers who died cremated the bodies after hours of negotiation between farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and the state police. The body of a fourth farmer is likely to be sent for a second postmortem, which farmer leaders insist should be done at a Delhi hospital.
