Independence Day: PM Modi's turban a special signal to this election-bound state?

A staple of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attire on Independence Day is his turban.

On the occasion of India's 77th Independence Day, Modi chose a multi-coloured, bandhani-print, Rajasthani-style 'safa', with a long tail. The turban may be politically significant since Rajasthan is headed to elections this year.

In 2014, during his first Red Fort event as PM, Modi sported a bright red turban with a green tail. The next year, Modi wore an ochre-coloured turban with red and green embroidery.

In 2016, he chose a pink, saffron, and red 'safa'. Halfway through his term, in 2017, Modi wore a bright orange and red turban. In 2018, Modi's last Independence Day event before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he continued with the red-and-saffron colour scheme.

In his first Red Fort programme after winning the 2019 polls, Modi sported a yellow, red, and green 'safa'. In 2020, during the Covid pandemic, the Prime Minister donned a cream and saffron-coloured turban and used its tail to cover his nose and mouth.

The next year, he wore a Kolhapuri Pheta-style turban with a tail long enough to reach his ankles. In 2022, Modi chose a tricolour turban. It was white-coloured with saffron and green highlights.
