Delhi Mayor election: third bid to hold polls today after clashes, adjournments twice at MCD

Another attempt to held mayoral elections in Delhi will be held on 6 February 2023, after clashes between the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP led to postponement twice.

On 6 January, when the newly-elected councillors of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi met to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, clashes broke out over non-elected councillors being administered the oath first.

On 24 January, the nominated members were sworn-in first, and then elected councillors. However, the House was adjourned till the next date by presiding officer and BJP councillor Satya Sharma.

In the 4 December 2022 election, the Aam Aadmi Party won 134 wards, relegating the ruling BJP to second place with 104. AAP has fielded Shelly Oberoi against BJP's Rekha Gupta for the post of mayor. The candidates for the post of deputy mayor are - Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of AAP and Kamal Bagri of BJP.

The post of mayor in Delhi sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for reserved category, and the remaining two also being in the open category.
