BBC's Modi documentary: why release at time of India's G20 presidency, asks Kerala Governor

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has joined the group of voices opposing UK broadcaster BBC's documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Khan on 25 January 2023 linked the release of the documentary to India's presidency of the G20 group of nations. He questioned the timing of the release and said that the source of the documentary was one who had predicted in 1947 that India was not capable of preserving its freedom.

The two-part BBC documentary, which claims it investigated certain aspects relating to the 2002 Gujarat riots when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister of that state, has been trashed by the Ministry of External Affairs as a "propaganda piece" that lacked objectivity and reflected a "colonial mindset".

The Centre had last week directed the blocking of multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the documentary.

The public screening of the documentary in some places has sparked controversy.
