&nbsp;Lok Sabha was adjourned briefly on Tuesday due to protests by opposition members who alleged that BJP member C P Joshi had glorified 'Sati' in his speech. Joshi, however, clarified that he did not support the banned practice and that his remarks were on the tradition of 'Jauhar'.
He said he did not mention 'Sati' and perhaps due to an error in translation from Hindi, the word was mixed with his reference to 'Satitva' (chastity).
Joshi, a BJP member from Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, had initiated the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address when he referred to Padmavati, the queen of Mewar who is believed to have self-immolated when invader Allaudin Khilji laid a siege at the Chittor fort.
Opposition members Supriya Sule (NCP), Kanimozhi, Dayanidhi Maran, A Raja (DMK), K Muraleedharan (Congress) and Imtiaz Jaleel (AIMIM) were on their feet claiming that Joshi had glorified the practice of 'Sati'.
Joshi asserted that he had not made any reference to the practice of 'Sati', but mentioned that Padmavati had performed 'Jauhar' (self-immolation) to protect her honour.
&ldquo;I stand by my words,&rdquo; Joshi said, as opposition members raised slogans in the Well of the House.
As protests continued, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the proceedings for 20 minutes. When the House reassembled, Birla assured the House that objectionable references will be examined and expunged.
Joshi sought to further explain his comments and said he was mentioning 'Jauhar', a practice of mass self-immolation by women.
"Neither I nor my party has ever supported Sati... Perhaps due to an error in translation 'Satitva' was mixed with 'Sati'... My government keeps nation above politics," he said.
"She (Queen Padmavati) sacrificed her life to protect her 'Satitva' (chastity)...," Joshi said, inviting fresh protests from the Opposition benches.
"It was Jauhar... perhaps you don't understand Hindi," he added as protests continued.
As the ruckus continued, the Speaker again assured members that objectionable comments will be expunged and urged members to maintain the decorum of the House.
DMK leader A Raja said even as they wanted to abide by the rulings of the Chair, the reference made by the BJP MP was "completely against the society" and "anti-human".
Participating in the debate later, DMK's Kanimozhi said her head was hanging in shame due to the reference made in the House, even as she did not name the MP.
"Every country when it talks about its past has different narrations... Whose past are we talking about? We talk about the greatness of the nation, valour, art, temples, and philosophy.
"But we can't forget the people who found no place in history - the untouchables, the unseeable and women who were pushed in the fire in the name of honour," she said.
"Today we celebrate that and I stand on the floor of the House hanging my head in shame because we had to listen to something like that," she said.

Accusing Rahul Gandhi of making baseless, shameless and reckless allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Congress itself was involved in "big scams" which "tarnished" the image of the country.
Participating in the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address in Lok Sabha, Gandhi linked the massive rise in the business fortunes and personal wealth of businessman Gautam Adani to the Modi government coming to power in 2014, as he launched a sharp attack on the BJP dispensation over the Adani issue.
"Rahul Gandhi made baseless, shameless and reckless allegations against PM Modi," Prasad told reporters outside Parliament.
"The Congress and its leaders were involved in all those big scams which tarnished the image of India," he added.
Prasad also referred to the National Herald case and the AgustaWestland scam case to attack the Gandhi family. "It's time to revive the memory of Rahul Gandhi on corruption." He alleged that Rahul Gandhi, his mother Sonia Gandhi and her son-in-law Robert Vadra "are on bail".
The Congress party is based on the twin pillars of corruption and protecting the corrupt, he said.
"Corruption and giving protection to the corrupt have been the history of Rahul Gandhi and his family," Prasad said.&nbsp;

The Indian Express reported that a single judge bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma held that the virginity test conducted on on a Kerala nun, who was convicted for the murder of a fellow nun in 1992, was unconstitutional. The HC observed that the basic dignity of a person in custody has to be upheld, which had been flouted in this case.
Justice Sharma granted liberty to the convicted nun to seek compensation for the violation of her human rights after the criminal case is over.&nbsp;

The Army on Tuesday said it was prepared to give an appropriate response to any adverse aggressive designs of China in the Ladakh sector, maintaining that the integrity of the country was being ensured through physical patrolling and technical means.
"On the LAC, our response to Chinese attempts to unilaterally change the status quo was a swift, undaunted and synergised action by the Indian Armed Forces," General officer Commanding in Chief of Army's Northern Command Lt General Upendra Dwivedi said at an investiture ceremony at Badami Bagh Cantonment area here.
"Any adverse aggressive designs or attempts will definitely be met with appropriate posturing of Forces and a strong intent with complete synergy among the three services," he said.
He said measures to resolve Line of Actual Control (LAC) situation at diplomatic and operational levels are also simultaneously underway.
"I assure you that the LAC in Eastern Ladakh is being dominated by physical patrolling and through technical means and our territorial integrity is being ensured," he added.
Lt Gen Dwivedi said the Northern Command is in a high state of readiness and morale to face constantly evolving threats and challenges.
"The security situation in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh poses many challenges in terrain and operational dynamics, especially from different adversaries along the Northern and Western borders. We are committed to defending India's sovereignty and territorial integrity while upholding the democratic traditions of the Nation. "We are maintaining a constant vigil, monitoring all developments and will take all necessary steps to protect our National Interests," he said.
The Army commander said the Army is prepared to meet any challenges in the future and will always work for the betterment of the people of the region.
"The last two years have brought to the fore newer challenges in the wake of abrogation of Article 370, the Galwan conflict and multiple waves of COVID-19," he said.
"These challenges have only served to strengthen our resolve to be steadfast and determined in our commitment," he added.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday assured Bilkis Bano, who was gang-raped and seven members of her family killed during the 2002 Gujarat riots, that her plea against the remission of the sentence of 11 convicts will be heard soon after the constitution of a new bench.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala assured Bano, represented through her lawyer Shobha Gupta, that the new bench will be formed at the earliest.
Gupta mentioned the matter for urgent hearing and said that a new bench needs to be constituted by the Chief Justice of India as Justice Bela M Trivedi recused from hearing the plea.
CJI Chandrachud said, "I will do so at the earliest. The matter will be listed soon". Earlier, on January 24, the hearing on Bano's plea challenging the remission of sentence of 11 convicts in the gang-rape case by the Gujarat government could not be held in the top court as the judges concerned were hearing a matter related to passive euthanasia as part of a five-judge Constitution bench.
On that day, the petition was listed for hearing before a bench of Justices Rastogi and CT Ravikumar.
Both Justices Rastogi and Ravikumar were then busy hearing, as part of a Constitution bench headed by Justice K M Joseph, the pleas seeking modification of guidelines on the execution of a "Living Will or Advance Medical Directive" for permitting passive euthanasia.
On January 4, Justice Trivedi had recused from hearing a batch of pleas challenging the remission of the sentence of 11 convicts in Bano's case. &nbsp; Bano had moved the apex court on November 30, 2022 challenging the "premature" release of 11 lifers by the state government, saying it has "shaken the conscience of society".
Besides the plea challenging the release of the convicts, the gang-rape survivor had also filed a separate petition seeking a review of the apex court's May 13, 2022 order on a plea by a convict.
In its May 13, 2022 order, the apex court had asked the state government to consider the plea of a convict for premature release in terms of its policy of July 9, 1992 which was applicable on the date of conviction and decide it within a period of two months.
All 11 convicts were granted remission by the Gujarat government and released on August 15, last year.
Bano's review plea against the May 13, 2022 order, however, was dismissed by the top court in December last year.
The victim, in her pending writ petition, has said the state government passed a "mechanical order" completely ignoring the requirement of law as laid down by the Supreme Court.
"The en-masse premature release of the convicts in the much talked about case of Bilkis Bano has shaken the conscience of the society and resulted in a number of agitations across the country," she has said in the plea.
Referring to past verdicts, the plea said en-masse remissions are not permissible and, moreover, such a relief cannot be sought or granted as a matter of right without examining the case of each convict individually based on their peculiar facts and role played by them in the crime.
"The present writ petition challenging the decision of the State/ Central Government granting remission to all the 11 convicts and releasing them prematurely in one of the most gruesome crimes of extreme inhuman violence and brutality," it said.
The plea, which gave minute details of the crime, said Bilkis and her grown-up daughters were "shell-shocked with this sudden development".
"When the nation was celebrating its 76th Independence Day, all the convicts were released prematurely and were garlanded and felicitated in full public glare and sweets were circulated," it said.
The top court is already seized of PILs filed by CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali, Revati Laul, an independent journalist, Roop Rekha Verma, who is a former vice chancellor of the Lucknow University, and TMC MP Mahua Moitra against the release of the convicts.
Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was gang-raped while fleeing the riots that broke out after the Godhra train burning incident. Her three-year-old daughter was among the seven family members killed.
The investigation in the case was handed over to the CBI and the trial was transferred to a Maharashtra court by the Supreme Court.
A special CBI court in Mumbai had on January 21, 2008 sentenced the 11 to life imprisonment on charges of gang-rape of Bilkis Bano and murder of seven members of her family.
Their conviction was later upheld by the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court.
The 11 men convicted in the case walked out of the Godhra sub-jail on August 15 after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy. They had completed more than 15 years in jail.&nbsp;

A day after the govt banned the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Sunday shared the link to the documentary on her Twitter account, adding that she "has not been elected to represent the world&rsquo;s democracy to accept censorship".
"Watch it while you can", Moitra tweeted, taking a dig at the govt for blocking the social media links to the documentary.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Tuesday launched a stinging attack on the government over the Adani-Hindenburg issue and said the billionaire businessman had taken the country for a ride.
While participating in the debate on the 'Motion of Thanks to the President's Address' in Lok Sabha, Moitra, without naming Adani, said that a famous person whose name starts with 'A' and ends with 'I' and is not Advani, who stinks of crony capitalism, had duped everyone.
Soon after she concluded her speech, there were angry exchanges between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP members. Moitra was heard using certain objectionable words to which the Chair objected and urged members to avoid cuss words.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi asked Moitra to apologise out of morality and said if she does not it would reflect on her culture.

"India is on its way to becoming the third largest economy in the world. Don't let him smear your time in government, with a stink of crony capitalism. Please immediately order a full complete and thorough investigation into all matters...Our country's reputation is at risk," Moitra said.
She also said the House too has historically seen some of the greatest debates, some friendly, some not-so-friendly sparring matches.
"But it is more and less a sacred place where elected representatives could speak their minds without fear of favour...Today and I say this with a heavy heart, Lok Sabha is a space which stands out more for what cannot be said in this hall, than for what can we say. The list of unmentionables is actually far longer than the list of mentionables," she claimed.
"We cannot say China, we cannot say Pegasus, we can not say BBC, we cannot say Morbi, we cannot say Rafael, and sometimes we cannot even say Modi ji...," she said.

Continuing its support for quake-hit Turkey, India has sent its fourth Indian Air Force aircraft with relief material and rescue personnel.
MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi in a tweet confirmed that fourth IAF aircraft comprising&nbsp; 54 members of the Indian Army medical team and other equipment have been sent to Turkey.
A total of 4 four C-17 Globemaster military transport aircraft have been sent to Turkey with relief aid following the massive earthquake that has killed over 5000 people in the region.
India is also expected to send by Wednesday morning relief materials onboard a C-130J aircraft of the Indian Air Force to Syria which was also hit by the earthquake on Monday, people familiar with the matter said.
Several countries around the world have extended help to both countries in their rescue and recovery efforts.
