'Ban live-in relationships': BJP MP's demand in Parliament

A BJP Member of Parliament on July 26 asked the Modi government to enact a law to ban live-in relationships. Ajay Pratap Singh, an MP from poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, was speaking in the Rajya Sabha.

He said, "Mumbai's Saraswati was mercilessly murdered by her live-in partner, her remains were cooked in a pressure cooker, and fed to dogs. Such incidents come to light from time to time."

"As per WHO data, 35% of murders of women across the world are done by their intimate partners. Many times, men are also the victims," he added.

The MP reasoned, "In India, marriage and family are cultural heritage. Our religious texts, traditions, and principles do not recognise live-in relationships. However, 40 years ago, Supreme Court gave recognition to live-in relationships. The adverse impact of this has resulted in a rapid rise in live-in relationships in India."

He concluded by asking the government to ban such set-ups and saying, "I believe that if live-ins are immoral, then they should be illegal too."
