A petition challenging Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's conviction and sentencing by a trial court in Surat in a defamation case is ready and is likely to be filed very soon, sources said on Wednesday.
The party's top legal advisors are working on the review petition which will be filed before the Surat sessions court in a day or two, they added.
Gandhi was convicted and was given a two-year sentence in the 2019 defamation case over his remarks on Modi surname, following which he was disqualified as MP of Lok Sabha.
The Congress has said that it will fight the matter both politically and legally and will take the issue to the public.
Congress Whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore said the government has deliberately disqualified Rahul Gandhi under a well-planned conspiracy to not allow him to attend Parliament during this budget session.
"This is a totally false case and his disqualification has come to keep him away from Parliament. But, we will fight it both legally and politically," he told reporters outside Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission said it was in no hurry to announce bye-election to Wayanad constituency as the trail court has given Gandhi one month to appeal against the court order.
"There is no hurry, we will wait. There is not hurry to do it before exhausting that particular remedy which the trial court had accorded. We will take a call after that," Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said at a press conference. &nbsp;&nbsp;
He said the vacancy in the Wayanad parliamentary party was notified on March 23 this year and as per the law, a bypoll has to be conducted within six months. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Kumar said the law also states that if the remainder of the term was less than one year, then the election will not be held.&nbsp;
The CEC said that in the case of Wayanad, the remainder of the term is more than a year.&nbsp;

An All India Students&rsquo; Association (AISA) activist alleged that the men were heard chanting &ldquo;Miranda, IP dono hamara (Miranda House and Indraprastha College both are ours)&rdquo; and &ldquo;Miranda nahi chhoda to IP bhi nahi chhodenge (We didn&rsquo;t leave Miranda, we won&rsquo;t leave IP either)&rdquo;.
In October, some students of Delhi University&rsquo;s all-women Miranda House College alleged that several men scaled the boundary walls and the gates during an open Diwali fest on campus and indulged in &ldquo;cat-calling and sexist sloganeering&rdquo;.
The AISA&rsquo;s Delhi University unit secretary and former Indraprastha College for Women (IPCW) student Anjali shared purported photos and videos of the incident. In the photo, four men are seen standing near the IPCW boundary wall while another is scaling the wall.
The video clip shows the police asking the college students to vacate the premises.

The HC dismissed the application filed by Mamata Banerjee challenging a sessions court's order of January 2023 referring the matter back to the magistrate's court for inquiry. Banerjee in her application had said the sessions court, instead of quashing the summons ought to have quashed the entire complaint.

The Assam Cabinet on Monday decided to book men who marry girls below 14 years in the state under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Assam has a high rate of maternal and infant mortality and the primary cause is child marriage.
The state has an average of 31 per cent marriages in the &ldquo;prohibited age&rdquo;, Sarma said at a press conference following the Cabinet meeting.
&ldquo;Men marrying girls in the age group of 14-18, will be tried under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 and necessary steps will be taken against them under this law,&rdquo; the chief minister said.
The police have been directed to conduct a massive crackdown against child marriage across the state, he said.
A Child Protection Officer will be appointed in every village and it will be the duty of the Gram Panchayat Secretary to file a complaint against any child marriage taking place in their area, Sarma said.&nbsp;

2008 Jaipur blasts: Rajasthan HC acquits all accused given death sentence

The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday acquitted four men who were given the death sentence by a lower court for the 2008 serial Jaipur blasts that killed 71 people and slammed the investigating agencies over their "shoddy investigation".
It also affirmed the acquittal of a fifth accused by the trial court. Jaipur was rocked by a series of blasts on May 13, 2008 when bombs went off one after another at Manak Chawk Khanda, Chandpole Gate, Badi Chaupad, Chhoti Chaupad, Tripolia Gate, Johri Bazar and Sanganeri Gate.
The explosions in the evening left 71 people dead and 185 injured.
According to advocate S S Ali, the counsel for the accused, the high court lambasted the investigating agencies for doing a shoddy investigation in connecting the chain of evidence. The court also directed the director general of police of Rajasthan to take action against the officers involved in the investigation.
Ali said the court found the entire theory presented by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), which investigated the case, wrong. He said the high court issued directions to the chief secretary to monitor the case.
"The ATS failed to prove the travel plan of the accused that they had travelled from Delhi to Jaipur in a bus on May 13, had lunch at a restaurant, purchased cycles, planted bombs and returned the same day to Delhi in Shatabdi express. The ATS could not produce bus tickets," the counsel said.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

While 14,446 students from the three categories dropped out from Central Universities during the period, 4,444 students dropped out from IITs, and 366 from IIMs, the minister said.

More than 19,000 students from OBC, SC and ST categories dropped out from Central Universities, IITs, and IIMs during 2018-2023, according to the Ministry of Education.
The data was shared by Union Minister of State for Education, Subhas Sarkar, in response to a written question in Rajya Sabha.
According to available records, the number of drop out students from 2018 to 2023 in Central Universities (CUs), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in various courses is 19,256.
While 14,446 students from the three categories dropped out from Central Universities during the period, 4,444 students dropped out from IITs, and 366 from IIMs, the minister said.
&ldquo;In the Higher Education sector students have multiple options and they choose to migrate across institutions and from one course or programme to another in the same institution. The migration or withdrawal, if any, is mainly on account of securing seats by the students in other departments or institutions of their choice or on any personal ground,&rdquo; Mr. Sarkar said.
No case of caste discrimination and alienation of SC and ST students have been reported from IITs in the last five years, Mr. Sarkar informed the Rajya Sabha in response to a written question.
The Minister informed that seven cases of suicides by SC and ST students have been reported in IITs while the same number of students from the two categories in Central Universities died by suicide since 2018.
