An Indian man has been charged in the US over alleged plot to kill a Sikh leader

The US sent its two top intelligence officials to India to press for an investigation into an alleged plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist leader on American soil earlier.
The federal prosecutors have now filed a case against an Indian national, named Nikhil Gupta, in a New York court charging him with 'murder-for-hire'. The US document does not mention the target but acocrding to reports it is Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a separatist Khalistani leader who is both a US and Canadian citizen.
This comes on a day when India said that it has constituted a high-level enquiry committee to probe allegations relating to a conspiracy to kill the Sikh extremist on American soil.
The indictment has not named the US citizen but The Financial Times, citing unnamed sources, last week reported that US authorities thwarted a plot to assassinate banned Sikhs for Justice&rsquo;s Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, and issued a warning to the Indian government over concerns it was involved in the plot.

Home Minister Amit Shah asserted on Wednesday that the Central government will implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and no one can stop it.
Addressing a big rally here to launch the BJP's Lok Sabha campaign, Shah launched a blistering attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the issues of appeasement, infiltration, corruption and political violence, alleging she has "destroyed" the state.
Banerjee has been opposing the CAA due to her support to infiltration, he asserted, adding that a state with so much infiltration cannot develop.
He urged people to throw out her government by electing the BJP in the next assembly polls in 2026 and asked them to lay its foundation by supporting the party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
He said, "Give so many seats to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls that Modi ji says I have become PM due to Bengal." The Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress won the last assembly polls by "rigging" but the BJP jumped to 77 seats from zero, he said, calling upon people to end the TMC's alleged misrule of corruption, infiltration, and political violence by electing a government conducive to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's agenda of development.
Lauding the turnout at the rally, he said this indicates the people's mood and claimed that the BJP will come to power with two-third majority in the state in 2026.
The BJP's performance in the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls will create the foundation of its win in the assembly polls, he said.
Turning to the contentious CAA issue, he said Banerjee has been opposing it but it is a law of the country and no one can stop its implementation, which has been in a limbo as the central government is yet to frame its rules amid the opposition's strong stand against the law.
Parliament had passed the law in 2019 They, Shah said in a reference to the intended beneficiaries of the law, have as much a right to citizenship as anyone else. Banerjee has once stalled Parliament over the issue of infiltration but she is now keeping mum, he said, claiming that no one can infiltrate into Assam after the BJP was voted to power in the state.
"Assam has done a commendable job in stopping infiltration. But in West Bengal, infiltration persists due to the TMC government's vote-bank politics. Mamata Banerjee is opposing CAA, but let me say it clearly that CAA will be implemented in the country. No one can stop the implementation of CAA," Shah declared.
Hitting out at Banerjee over the suspension of the Leader of Opposition in Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari, he said she may try to silence him but cannot silence people of the state.
Her time as the state's chief minister is over, he said, often referring to her as 'didi'.
Shah dared Banerjee to suspend from her party some of its leaders arrested in corruption cases and said she cannot do it as she apprehended that they may implicate her nephew, a reference to MP Abhishek Banerjee.
"The people of Bengal are fed up with the cut money and syndicates of TMC," he said.
The home minister said as many as 212 BJP workers have been killed in West Bengal in political violence and added that people will avenge these murders with their votes in the 2026 assembly polls.
Banerjee has destroyed West Bengal, Shah alleged, citing political violence, corruption, appeasement in state. The state's development is Modi's top priority but it can only happen when there is a government conducive to the prime minister's agenda, he said.
He urged people to ensure a big win for the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls.
"We must ensure that the BJP forms the next government in West Bengal. To achieve this, we must win the maximum number of Lok Sabha seats from the state in the next Parliamentary elections," Shah emphasised, echoing sentiments expressed during an April rally when he set a target of winning over 35 seats in the state.

The operation to rescue the workers trapped in Uttarakhand's Silkyara tunnel has been going on for 17 days. The delay in bringing out the workers was partly due to the obstructions faced by the drilling machines while clearing the debris.&nbsp;
Auger and drilling machines kept hitting metal obstructions in the debris, stalling the rescue work.&nbsp;
This led to manual intervention with rescue workers entering the the narrow pipes pushed through the rescue holes to cut the metal structures using gas cutters.&nbsp;
According to the Indian Express, on the 12th day of the rescue operation, the teams faced a similar situation.&nbsp;
Praveen Yadav, an underground tunnelling expert for Trenchless Engineering, told Indian Express that several people tried to enter the narrow pipes but could not in the absence of a proper oxygen supply.&nbsp;
He volunteered to go in but his boss asked him to wait for the National Disaster Response Force personnel to try.&nbsp;
Yadav told the Indian Express that NDRF jawans were to big and the rescue pipes too small so he ultimately went in with two other people.&nbsp;
Yadav said he took a gas cutter, two bottles of water and crawled into the pipes on his knees and elbows.&nbsp;

He said that sometimes the work requires him to go inside those pipes two or three times a day.&nbsp;
Yadav and his aides found the metal girders and cut them using gas cutters. They then removed the cut pieces.&nbsp;
He said that the process generated a lot of heat and they faced the risk of sustaining burn injuries.&nbsp;

The Law Commission has advised the government not to tinker with the existing age of consent under the POCSO Act and suggested introducing guided judicial discretion in the matter of sentencing in cases involving tacit approval of children in the 16-18 age bracket.
The Law Commission has submitted its report on the age of consent under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to the Law Ministry in which it has suggested that amendments are needed in the legislation to remedy the situation in cases involving tacit approval, though not consent in law, on the part of children aged between 16 and 18.
The current age of consent in India is 18.
The panel said that reducing the age of consent will have a direct and negative bearing on the fight against child marriage and child trafficking and also advised courts to tread with caution even in cases where it is observed that adolescent love cannot be controlled and criminal intention may be missing.

The United States has charged an Indian man for allegedly being involved in a plot to kill an American citizen in New York. The documents submitted by US say that the target was a Sikh activist who advocated for separate state of Khalistan.&nbsp;
US has claimed that Indian government employee contacted Nikhil Gupta in May 2023 and &lsquo;recruited GUPTA to orchestrate the assassination of the Victim in the United States. &lsquo;
&lsquo;In or about May 2023, CC-1 recruited GUPTA to orchestrate the assassination of the Victim in the United States. &nbsp;The Victim is a vocal critic of the Indian government and leads a U.S.-based organization that advocates for the secession of Punjab, a state in northern India that is home to a large population of Sikhs, an ethnoreligious minority group in India,&rsquo; a press release on the US Justice Department website says.&nbsp;
The document adds that Gupta contacted an individual he believed to be a &lsquo;criminal associate&rsquo; but he was a &lsquo;confidential source&rsquo; working with the American Drug Enforcement Agency. Gupta wanted the associate to help him contract a hitman for the alleged assassination plot.&nbsp;
The associate introduced Gupta to a &lsquo;purported hitman, who was in fact a DEA undercover officer&rsquo;.&nbsp;
The indictment filed by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York says that the India government employee agreed through Nikhil Gupta to pay the &lsquo;hitman&rsquo; $100,000 for assassination.
&lsquo;In or about June 2023&rsquo;, the Indian govt employee gave Gupta personal information about the target including his number, address and schedule. Gupta then passed the details to the &lsquo;hitman&rsquo;. The US document says Gupta sent the Indian government employee regular surveillance photographs of the target.&nbsp;
US prosecutors have said that Gupta asked the &lsquo;hitman&rsquo;, who was a US undercover agent, to carry out the murder as soon as possible but asked him not to do anything &lsquo;around the time of anticipated engagements scheduled to occur in the ensuing weeks between high-level U.S. and Indian government officials.&rsquo;
On June 20, 2023 &ndash; two days after Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed in Canada &ndash; Gupta sent the &lsquo;hitman&rsquo; a news article on the target and said the assassination was now a priority.&nbsp;

Citing sources in Delhi Police, the Indian Express reported that despite multiple requests and letters to social media giant Meta and tech company GoDaddy, they have not provide details about the morphed video.
According to the report, Meta accepted police&rsquo;s first and second appeals seeking information but denied the third time. A senior police officer said they had detained a man from Bihar and seized his device.

Voting for the 119-member Assembly in Telangana has began.

Voting has began to elect 119 members to the Telangana Legislative Assembly.
Voters would exercise their franchise in 35,655 polling stations set up across the state. There are 3.26 crore eligible voters in the state.
As many as 2,290 contestants are in the fray for the upcoming elections, including Chief Minister K Chandrasekar Rao, his son KT Rama Rao, state Congress president A Revanth Reddy and BJP Lok Sabha members Bandi Sanjay Kumar and D Arvind.
BRS has fielded candidates in all 119 seats. As per the seat sharing agreement, BJP and actor Pawan Kalyan-headed Jana Sena are contesting in 111 and 8 seats respectively, while Congress has given one seat to its ally CPI, and fighting from 118 others.
Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM has put up candidates in nine segments in the city.
