Prasad Politics: Suvendu Adhikari vs TMC in West Bengal

Kolkata, Jun 25 (PTI) In a move that stirs the political waters of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, announced the distribution of 'prasad' from the Jagannath Temple in Puri starting June 27, coinciding with Rath Yatra. Adhikari stated that the distribution would take place at the Gauranga Mahaprabhu temple in Tamluk town, lasting for five days.

This announcement comes at a time when the state's ruling TMC government is distributing prasad from the recently inaugurated Jagannath temple in Digha across West Bengal. The temple had been inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on April 30.

Both Tamluk and Digha are located in the Purba Medinipur district. Adhikari took a swipe at the TMC, accusing them of distributing local sweets under the guise of 'prasad' from the Digha temple.

In response, the TMC, critiquing Adhikari, accused him of politicizing religion. TMC spokesperson Jaiprakash Majumdar commented that Adhikari has been known to blend religion and competition.

Majumdar also noted the local custom of buying sweets during the Durga Puja festival as commonplace, suggesting there's no need for political games over religious traditions. The TMC emphasized that such practices shouldn't become political fodder, with Majumdar stating, "Adhikari is playing football over religion."
