PMJAY scheme paid 6.9 crore for treating the deceased: CAG

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana funded Rs. 6.9 crores for treating “dead” patients, as per the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

Out of the 3446 “dead” patients, 966 were in Kerala, 403 in Madhya Pradesh and 365 in Chhattisgarh.

The scheme was launched in 2018, 2 years before COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. It aimed to cut down the expenses of those seeking treatment.

After the watchdog pointed out the irregularities in the PMJAY scheme’s implementation, the National Health Association said “back-date of admission is allowed in the system for various operational reasons.”

However, an Indian Express report says that current guidelines suggest an audit before payment if a patient dies while still admitted in the hospital.
