Ukraine War: PM Modi, Putin talk hours after Zelenskyy call, discuss Indians' evacuation from Sumy

Hours after speaking to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone conversation with Russia President Vladimir Putin on March 7, as Indian students continue to stay trapped in Sumy. The phone call reportedly lasting around 50 minutes, and the evolving situation in Ukraine was discussed.

Putin briefed PM Modi on the status of negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian delegations, as per reports quoting sources. PM Modi reportedly urged Putin to have direct talks with Ukraine's leader Zelenskyy, while appreciating the announcement of a ceasefire, and opening of humanitarian corridors to allow evacuations.

PM Modi reportedly laid emphasis on the safe evacuation of Indians stuck in Sumy at the earliest, and was assured of all possible cooperation by Putin.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi had spoken to Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In the 35-minute phone call, the two reportedly discussed the continuing conflict, and PM Modi thanked Zelenskyy for support in rescue of Indians from the war-torn country.
