PM Modi's Twitter account compromised: govt's probe team to reach out to Twitter, Google

The Central government has launched a 'full-scale investigation' in to the hacking of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s twitter account which early on Sunday sent out a Bitcoin scam link.

Officials of the Indian Computer Emergency Response System, which is the nodal agency for monitoring cyber security incidents and threats, told The Indian Express that a probe team headed by a joint secretary-level officer will reach out to Twitter and Google to get to the crux of the matter.

The nodal agency is expected to submit its probe report to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology soon, the report said.

The US-based micro-blogging site had on Sunday said that “As per its investigation to date, it appears that the account was not compromised due to any breach of twitter’s systems.”

At 2:11 am Sunday, Modi’s Twitter account sent out a tweet saying “India has officially adopted Bitcoin as a legal tender”. The tweet also had a link to a blog, with a postscript that said: “The future has come today”.

Nearly an hour later, another tweet from the official handle of the Prime Minister’s Office said the Prime Minister’s twitter handle was “very briefly compromised”.
