The Congress on Tuesday demanded that the Modi government should take Parliament into confidence on the details of both the EU and US trade deals, while alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has "completely surrendered" to appease US President Donald Trump at the cost of India's farmers.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh hit out at the government over the announcement of the India-US trade deal, saying "India stands diminished by this unfortunate sequence of events."&nbsp;
He said that from the information President Trump has provided, it is abundantly clear that Prime Minister Modi has "completely surrendered".
Ramesh said that almost exactly a year ago, Prime Minister Modi landed at the White House to greet President Trump on his re-election. "His trademark huglomacy was on full display. India-US relations never appeared brighter. Negotiations for a trade deal started immediately thereafter. But ever since President Trump made the first announcement of the halt to Operation Sindoor on the evening of May 10, 2025 things began to go downhill," Ramesh said on X.

Subsequently, President Trump embraced Pakistan and Field Marshal Asim Munir enthusiastically, "exposing the hollowness of Mr. Modi's huglomacy", he said.
Ramesh pointed out that President Trump announced the trade deal very late last night Indian time. "From the information President Trump has provided, it is abundantly clear that Prime Minister Modi has - like he did on May 10, 2025 -- completely surrendered. He has most definitely appeased President Trump. India stands diminished by this unfortunate sequence of events," he claimed.
Pointing out that Parliament is in session, Ramesh said the text of both the EU and US trade deals must be laid on the table of both Houses and debated, "especially since the US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins has issued a statement claiming that India has liberalised agricultural imports from the US".
Members of several opposition parties also staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha while raising the issue of the Indo-US trade deal and demanding a discussion on it.
Several Opposition MPs from the Rajya Sabha, including Ramesh, Digvijaya Singh and Randeep Surjewal, AAP's Sanjay Singh, RJD's Manoj Jha, among others, protested in Parliament premises and alleged that the interests of farmers in India had been compromised by the government.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, "We very strongly feel there is a need for clarity" as all there is so far is President Trump&rsquo;s tweets and press statements, with no details.

"President Trump talks about India purchasing USD 500 billion worth of US goods, our entire import bill is USD 700 billion, how can we spend USD 500 billion on the US... he mentions we will purchase American agricultural goods, apparently the American secretary of agriculture is saying that Indian market will be open to American farmers, we need to understand the terms of all of this because there are very significant political implications for India's farmers," he said.
The government must take Parliament into confidence and clearly explain what has been agreed to, he added.
"Obviously a trade deal is good for India, we need the vast American market, 18 per cent is better than 50 per cent we all know that but we need to understand all the details before we can celebrate. At the moment we have a situation where the Congress is asking questions, the BJP is not providing any answers," Tharoor told reporters.
Senior Congress leader and former Commerce Minister Anand Sharma hoped that the trade deal reached is as sovereign equals and safeguards India's core interests in sensitive agriculture, dairy and pharma sectors.
"India and US share a strategic and important partnership. Hope the trade deal reached is as sovereign equals and safeguards India's core interests in sensitive agriculture, dairy and pharma sectors," he said.
"Also there is no dilution of policy that relationship with one partner is not at the cost of another strategic partner and the freedom to trade is respected. Government must take parliament and nation in confidence," he said on X.
In a post on X from its official handle, the Congress hit out at the government and said India has the right to know details of the trade deal.
"Just like the ceasefire, the announcement of the trade deal was also made by US President Trump. It has been stated that the trade deal is being done 'on Modi's request'," the party said.

There is talk of opening the agriculture sector for America in the statement as well, the Congress said and asked what exactly is the deal.
How has the security and interests of our farmers been ensured, the party further asked.
It has also been said that the Modi government will not buy oil from Russia, but will buy from America and Venezuela instead, the Congress pointed out and asked whether the Modi government agreed to this condition.
"The Modi government must take the Parliament and the entire country into confidence and share all the details," the party added.
Trump on Monday said India and the US agreed to a trade deal.
On his part, PM Modi said he was delighted that "made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18 per cent".
This came after India and the European Union, on January 27, sealed a landmark free trade agreement -- billed as the "mother of all deals" -- to create a market of two billion people.

As opposition members started protesting in the House, Leader of the House J P Nadda said the US President was informed about the reduction in tariffs on Indian goods through a post on social media and also spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Nadda alleged that the Opposition's frustration was coming out, and it had started seeing bad even in good things. "I want to assure the House that the government is ready to discuss the Indo-US trade deal and provide all minute details of the deal. The government will come out with a suo motu statement on the trade deal. But this methodology is fatal for democracy and is the irresponsible behaviour of the Indian National Congress and the INDI alliance," Nadda said.
The opposition members continued raising slogans alleging that the interests of the country were being bartered, Chairman C P Radhakrishnan said, when the government is making a statement, and they should listen. He said the government is ready to discuss, but the opposition members are creating an uproar.

Speaking on the campaign, Italia said, &ldquo;For a long time, the people of Gujarat have been voting for BJP out of compulsion. Due to remaining in power for years, BJP has developed such arrogance and ego as if Gujarat is their father&rsquo;s property. Whereas in a democratic system, the ultimate authority always lies with the people as per the Constitution. No ruler, no government, and no party is greater than the people.&rdquo;
He alleged that under BJP rule, dominance and exploitation by father-son duos prevail in the state. &ldquo;Wherever BJP leaders require land, bulldozers are deployed overnight, and the livelihoods of poor people are destroyed. In many places, cases have emerged where sons of BJP leaders have been involved in criminal activities such as MNREGA scams, drugs, liquor, cuts in government contracts, extortion, and violence,&rdquo; Italia said.
He added, &ldquo;Sons of BJP leaders think, &lsquo;My father is in BJP, nothing will happen to me,&rsquo; and this mindset has caused great damage to Gujarat. From villages to the state government, people are troubled by BJP&rsquo;s father-son politics. Against this situation, the Aam Aadmi Party has decided to move forward with a clear message.&rdquo;
Italia further explained the meaning of the new slogan, stating, &ldquo;Gujarat being &lsquo;aapnu&rsquo; means Gujarat belongs to the common people. Through this slogan, the party will remind the people of Gujarat that Gujarat does not belong to political heirs, but to crores of hardworking people&mdash;farmers, workers, youth, women, and marginalized sections. With this slogan, the Aam Aadmi Party is launching a massive public outreach campaign to reach every home, every lane, and every individual across the state. On the issue of recent demolitions in Rajkot and other parts of the state, Italia said, &ldquo;Whenever BJP leaders like a piece of land, bulldozers arrive overnight. That is why AAP repeatedly says that Gujarat does not belong to BJP&rsquo;s fathers or BJP leaders&rsquo; fathers. When BJP leaders liked land in Vatva and Ranip of Ahmedabad, bulldozers arrived there. BJP leaders, collectors, and police come together to vacate land&mdash;this will no longer be tolerated. Homes of people living near Motera for 50 years were demolished. Similarly, bulldozers are being used in the name of dream projects in Sanand and along the SG Highway, in Jangleshwar of Rajkot, around Somnath Temple, and likewise in Surat.&rdquo;
He added, &ldquo;When common people go to court, cases drag on for years. In my view, justice delivered in the people&rsquo;s court is faster than in government courts. In the people&rsquo;s court, justice is delivered in favor of the victims. When people&rsquo;s conscience awakens and justice is served, BJP will not be able to show its face. We stand with all these victims&mdash;whether it is a legal battle or a street protest&mdash;we stand with the victims everywhere.&rdquo;

"The prime minister said the NDA is winning one after another elections due to its good work. He said election can't be won without being on the ground. We have to be on the ground and do good work for the welfare of the people," Rijiju said.

It was hearing appeals filed by Meta and WhatsApp against a National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) judgment that upheld the CCI&rsquo;s findings of abuse of dominance, while granting limited relief on advertising-related data sharing.
"You can't play with the right of privacy of this country in the name of data sharing. We will not allow you to share a single word of the data, either you give an undertaking...you cannot violate the right of privacy of citizens,&rdquo; the CJI said.
The bench said the right to privacy is zealously guarded in the country and noted that the privacy terms are &ldquo;so cleverly crafted&rdquo; that a common person cannot understand them.
&ldquo;This is a decent way of committing theft of private information, we will not allow you to do that... You have to give an undertaking otherwise, we have to pass an order,&rdquo; the CJI said.

The breakthrough follows a high-level telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.
In a reciprocal move, India has committed to reducing trade barriers for American goods and significantly increasing imports across sectors, including energy, technology, and agriculture.
Following the trade agreement announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was delighted that "Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18 per cent".
"Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18 per cent. Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement," Modi said.
He said when two large economies and the world's largest democracies work together, it benefits the people and "unlocks immense opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation".
"President Trump's leadership is vital for global peace, stability, and prosperity. India fully supports his efforts for peace," Modi said on 'X'.
President Trump said India will move forward to reduce "tariffs and non tariff barriers" against the US to zero, adding New Delhi would buy American goods, including energy, worth more than USD 500 billion.
"Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Modi and, as per his request, effective immediately, we agreed to a trade deal between the United States and India, whereby the United States will charge a reduced reciprocal tariff, lowering it from 25 per cent to 18 per cent," the US president said on social media.
India will "likewise move forward to reduce their tariffs and non tariff barriers against the United States, to zero", he said.
Trump said Modi also committed to buy American goods at a much higher level, in addition to over USD 500 billion dollars of US energy, technology, agricultural, coal, and many other products.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is probing the crash that killed a total of 260 people.
In one of the worst aircraft accidents in India, a total of 260 people, including 241 passengers, died after Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft operating flight AI171 to London Gatwick crashed soon after take off from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol on Monday told the Rajya Sabha that the AAIB probe is in progress.
"All probable causes leading to the accident are being investigated, and all efforts are being made to complete the investigation in a time-bound manner," he said in a written reply.
In its preliminary report on the crash that was released on July 12 last year, AAIB said the fuel supply to both engines of the plane was cut off within a gap of one second, causing confusion in the cockpit soon after takeoff.
"In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cut off. The other pilot responded that he did not do so," it had said.
On Monday, Mohol also said the preliminary report on the accident contains factual information based on the evidence available at that point in time and does not include any interim safety recommendations.
A source on January 30 told PTI that the AAIB team probing last year's fatal Air India plane crash was examining certain components of the aircraft and assessing various aspects, and "nothing has been ruled out" in terms of the factors that could have led to the accident.
All aspects related to technical, operational, organisational and human factors are being looked into, and it is a very complex process. Certain components of the aircraft are also being examined by AAIB, the source had said.

The Congress on Monday alleged that the Modi government "heckled" Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to stop him from speaking in the Lok Sabha on the India-China border conflict of 2020 from former Army chief Manoj Naravane's "memoir" as it was afraid that the "truth of its incompetence" would be exposed.
Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said that the government had deployed senior-most Cabinet ministers and "misused" rules to "silence" Gandhi in the House.

"They moved heaven and earth to stall the publishing of Ex Army Chief Gen. Manoj Naravane ji&rsquo;s book - and now when excerpts are coming out which expose their so-called nationalist commitments, they are heckling and silencing the Leader of Opposition," the Congress leader said in a post on X.
He alleged that by "blatantly misinterpreting the rules of procedure, the Government is depriving the House and the people of India from knowing about their Himalayan blunders in the conflict against China".
"It is a textbook case of 21st-century fascism, where first you stifle dissent in public, and then misuse rules to further silence your opponents," Venugopal alleged.
A row erupted in the Lok Sabha on Monday when Rahul Gandhi sought to quote from the unpublished "memoir" of Naravane but Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with other BJP members, strongly opposed it and accused the Congress leader of "misleading" the House.
The House was adjourned twice due to the uproar over the issue.
As Gandhi rose to speak on the Motion of Thanks to the president's address, he said he would first like to respond to the charges made by the previous speaker, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, against the Congress on nationalism and began quoting from what he stated was the "memoir" of Naravane talking about the India-China conflict of 2020.
However, Singh strongly protested this and asked Gandhi to clarify whether the book had been published or not.

Eight Congress MPs were suspended from the Lok Sabha for unruly behaviour, including tearing and throwing papers, following disruptions over Rahul Gandhi citing excerpts from former Army chief M M Naravane&rsquo;s unpublished memoir.

In escalation of the tussle between the government and the opposition, seven Congress members and one CPI-M MP were suspended from the Lok Sabha on Tuesday for 'unruly behaviour' after they tore papers and threw them at the Chair.
Their suspension from the House for the remaining part of the Budget Session that concludes on April 2 will intensify the face-off with the government over various issues, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi being denied an opportunity to cite an article based on excerpts from an unpublished 'memoir' of former Army chief M M Naravane on India-China conflict of 2020.
The opposition have also raised concerns about American President Donald Trump announcing the India-US trade deal and the alleged demolition drive at the Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi.
As soon as the House met at 3 pm following multiple adjournments, Dilip Saikia, who was in the Chair, named the eight Congress members.
Subsequently, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju read out a resolution seeking suspension of the eight members for the remaining period of the Budget session.
The suspended members are Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C Kiran Kumar Reddy, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Prashant Padole and Dean Kuriakose (all Congress) and S Ventakesan (CPI-M).
Moving the resolution seeking their suspension, Rijiju said the members acted in utter disregard to the House and the authority of the Chair.
They also tore papers and them on the Chair and were named by the Chair for their behaviour, the minister added.
The suspended had also tried to climb on to the table of the Secretary General, tore papers and threw them at the Chair.
The House passed the resolution by a voice vote, following which the proceedings were adjourned for the day amid uproar.
Congress members, led by Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest outside Parliament building against the suspension of party members.
Later, Opposition MPs said the suspended members will continue to protest outside the House.
Since Monday afternoon, the House has been witnessing uproar after Gandhi was disallowed to cite the article based on excerpts from Naravane's unpublished book on India-China conflict of 2020.

Hitting back at the Congress and Gandhi, BJP MP Anurag Thakur asked whether the Congress and others in the opposition are with India's interest.
He also slammed Gandhi over his allegation that Prime Minister Modi buckled under US pressure to finalise a trade deal.
Speaking to reporters, Gandhi said the issue is not Naravane's statement, &ldquo;that is a side show&rdquo;, but the main thing is that &ldquo;our prime minister has been compromised&rdquo;.
&ldquo;I want to say three things. They are not allowing me to speak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is rattled. And the trade deal that had been stuck for the last four months, for some reason which Prime Minister Modi and I know, was sealed last evening,&rdquo; he said.

Gandhi also claimed that Modi is under "enormous pressure", and his &ldquo;image balloon&rdquo; that had been inflated with thousands of crores could burst.
&ldquo;The issue is not Naravane's statement, that is a side show, he (Modi) and I both know it. The main thing is that our prime minister has been compromised. Who has done it and how it has been done, the people of India have to think about it,&rdquo; Gandhi said.
The Leader of Opposition also said the farmers of India must understand that their hard work, as well as their blood and sweat, has been &ldquo;sold off&rdquo; by Prime Minister Modi through this deal.
&ldquo;He has sold it because he is compromised. He has not just sold you off, but the whole country. That is why they are not allowing me to speak," Gandhi said, claiming that the prime minister is &ldquo;scared&rdquo;.
Asked what kind of pressure he was referring to, Gandhi said there is a case against industrialist Gautam Adani in the US and a lot more is to come in the Epstein files matter.
&ldquo;There is a case on Adani in the US&hellip; That is not targeting Adani but Modi's financial structure. The Epstein files have more matter,&rdquo; Gandhi said.
The Epstein files refer to thousands of pages of documents related to two criminal investigations into sex trafficking by financier Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, including travel logs, recordings, and emails, which have been a topic of conversation since Epstein died in custody in 2019.
Gandhi also called the pressure of the Epstein files and the case against Adani the two &ldquo;pressure points&rdquo; for the government.
India and the US agreed to a trade deal under which Washington will bring down reciprocal tariff on Indian goods to 18 per cent from current 25 per cent, US President Donald Trump said on Monday after a phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The prime minister said he was delighted that "Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18 per cent".

The Delhi High Court has permitted IRS officer Sameer Wankhede to move a Mumbai court with his defamation suit against Shah Rukh Khan-owned Red Chillies Entertainment over the web series "The Ba***ds of Bollywood."

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday permitted IRS officer Sameer Wankhede to move a court in Mumbai with his lawsuit alleging defamation by &ldquo;The Ba***ds of Bollywood&rdquo; series produced by Shah Rukh Khan-owned Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt Ltd.
Justice Vikas Mahajan allowed Wankhede's application and asked the parties to appear before a civil court in Malad on February 12.
"The application is allowed. Let the parties appear before the City Civil &amp; Sessions Court, Dindoshi, Malad in Mumbai on February 12 when he (Wankhede) proposes to present the plaint," the judge said.
The court also said the order would be treated as summons to the parties in the case that would now be taken up by the Mumbai court.
Wankhede filed the application after the high court's January 29 ruling that it had no territorial jurisdiction to hear his lawsuit. Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav had "returned" the plaint to Wankhede and said since the parties resided in Mumbai and the alleged wrong also occurred there, the courts in Mumbai had the power to deal with such a plea.
According to Wankhede, "defamatory content" was created in the web series to settle personal scores with him and avenge the arrest of Khan's son Aryan Khan in a 2021 drugs case.
He claimed the series, written and directed by Aryan Khan, was orchestrated to target and malign him.
Wankhede sued Red Chillies and Netflix for defamation and sought an order of injunction as well as Rs 2 crore in damages, which he wanted to be donated to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital for cancer patients.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the India-US trade deal is a "big decision" that will benefit everyone in the country, and asserted that his government always works in favour of the nation.&nbsp;
The prime minister made these remarks at the meeting of the NDA Parliamentary Party, coalition MPs present at the meeting said.
NDA coalition members congratulated Modi for the trade deals with the EU and the US, saying it would strengthen Indian manufacturers, exporters and entrepreneurs.
The prime minister said the India-US trade deal is a "big decision" and will benefit everyone in the country, an MP who attended the meeting said. India and the US have agreed to a trade deal under which Washington will bring down the reciprocal tariff on Indian goods to 18 per cent from a total 50 per cent.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said there is excitement about the deal in the entire country. "There is excitement among the MPs that nine trade deals have been concluded under the leadership of the PM. The trade deals have been signed with a total of 39 countries. This is historic. All these 39 countries are developed countries...This is historic. There has been a very good atmosphere in the country," he said after the meeting.
Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora said, "PM Modi explained to all the MPs that the government works in favour of India, be it a trade deal or budget. The credit for the trade deal between India and America and India and India-Europe goes to PM Modi. This has happened because of his determination. The trade deal will give benefits to small-scale businessmen,&rdquo; he asserted.
Shrikant Shinde, leader of the Shiv Sena and a key NDA partner, said, "During the meeting, NDA leaders welcomed the major breakthrough following the productive conversation between Prime Minister Modi ji and US President Donald Trump, which led to the announcement of reduced tariffs on Made in India products," Modi wrote on 'X': "Attended the NDA Parliamentary Party meet, where we discussed a wide range of issues".
At the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting, the members also welcomed new BJP President Nitin Nabin and congratulated him on the election to the top party post.
The prime minister told NDA leaders that the coalition has been winning various elections due to its people-friendly policies and hard work, Rijiju said. Modi also told NDA MPs that they should not be complacent with their win in various polls, including local bodies, but continue with the good work.
Rijiju said the prime minister gave broad guidelines for the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs to carry forward their parliamentary and welfare works. "The prime minister said the NDA is winning one after another elections due to its good work. He said elections can't be won without being on the ground. We have to be on the ground and do good work for the welfare of the people," Rijiju said.
JD(S) leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy said the NDA meeting reflected the collective commitment to strengthening India&rsquo;s economic partnerships and advancing the vision of Viksit Bharat.
MPs belonging to the BJP, TDP, JD(U), LJP (R), Shiv Sena, JD(S) and other constituents of the NDA attended the meeting.
LJP(RV) leader and Union Minister Chirag Paswan said the NDA meeting also discussed the general budget, which has been widely appreciated by a large section of the country's population. "PM Modi ensures constant dialogue with all NDA allies so that there is no lack of communication. MPs form the foundation of any government, and it is their important responsibility to take the government's policies and decisions to every village and district," Paswan said.
BJP member Aparajita Sarangi said the prime minister provided extensive guidance and direction on key issues. "He asked us to actively participate in Parliament, both in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. He also spoke about the role of Standing Committees and urged everyone to give their 100 per cent. He spoke about the vision of 'Viksit Bharat' and discussed the Budget in detail, motivating all of us," Sarangi said.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi authenticated an article citing former army chief M M Naravane&rsquo;s unpublished memoir in the Lok Sabha, amid opposition uproar and adjournments over his attempt to quote it.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday authenticated a copy of an article in the Lok Sabha which cited former army chief M M Naravane's unpublished 'memoir' but it failed to end the impasse over the matter, leading to a brief adjournment.
With Gandhi insisting on raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Chair Krishna Prasad Tenneti moved on to other Speakers and asked Harish Balayogi of the TDP, an NDA constituent, to speak on the President's address after three opposition MPs refused to speak, showing solidarity with Gandhi.
As Balayogi spoke, opposition MPs raised slogans and the ruckus continued in the House, prompting the chair to adjourn it till 3 PM. Tenneti asked Congress MP KC Venugopal to address the chair properly and not make any casual references to the chair.
As soon as Gandhi was asked to speak on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address, he cited the Speaker's ruling of Monday and authenticated the copy of the article. "I have authenticated it," he said.
To authenticate a document, a member has to submit a signed copy of it affirming that it is correct to the best of his knowledge. Tenneti, who was chairing the House, asked him to table it and said "we will examine it and get back".
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Speaker passed a ruling on the matter and after that Gandhi should not raise the issue repeatedly. Gandhi insisted that he is the Leader of Opposition and takes objection to the term 'permission' when he has to speak.
As the impasse continued over Gandhi seeking to quote the article, Tenneti adjourned the proceedings till 3 pm.
A row had erupted in the Lok Sabha on Monday when Gandhi sought to quote from an unpublished 'memoir' of the former army chief on the 2020 India-China conflict, but faced strong opposition from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other BJP members who accused the Congress leader of misleading the House.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla disallowed Gandhi from raising the issue, but he did not relent and several opposition leaders also rallied behind him. The House was adjourned twice and later for the day amid uproar as heated exchanges took place between the treasury and opposition benches.
