The Ghaggar river's rising levels in Patiala have led to advisories for local villages. Officials urge caution, highlighting swollen rivers due to persistent rain, while emphasizing precautionary measures.

Advisory Issued as Ghaggar River Swells in Patiala

Patiala, Sep 1 (PTI) - The water level in the Ghaggar river near the Bhankharpur area has risen as of Monday, which has led the district administration to issue advisories for several nearby villages.

The district authorities have alerted residents in the Ghanaur and Sanour constituencies within the Rajpura sub-division to remain vigilant and avoid going close to the river, officials stated.

Avikesh Gupta, the Sub-divisional Magistrate (Rajpura), specifically advised residents of Uontsar, Nanhedi, Sanjarpur, Lachhru, Kamalpur, Rampur, Saunta, Maru, and Chamaru villages to stay alert.

Likewise, officials have also cautioned residents of Bhasmra, Jalahkheri Raju Kheri, Hadaana, Pur, Dharmeri, Ultpur, and Sirkapra villages to be on high alert.

With persistent rainfall, Deputy Commissioner Patiala, Dr. Preeti Yadav, warned that local drains, ponds, and rivers including Ghaggar, Gangri, and Markanda are swollen. She urged the public to avoid using temporary roads near water bodies and to refrain from unnecessary travel.

She also advised citizens not to stand on or near bridges and swollen water bodies for photography or leisure, and urged against leading animals or herds near riverbanks.

Dr. Yadav mentioned that an alert will remain in place for the next three days, during which the district administration will be monitoring the situation continuously and issuing timely alerts as needed.

"Our teams are stationed at vulnerable points along river channels and across villages in the district," she said.

She assured that while there is no immediate cause for panic, taking precautionary measures remains crucial.
