Passenger trains cause losses to Indian Railways: Union minister Raosaheb Danve

Commenting on the finances of the Indian Railways, a Union minister said that passenger trains do not monetarily benefit the railways. Raosaheb Danve, who is Minister of State (MoS) for railways, said that the central government runs passenger trains for the convenience of people.

He said that for every rupee spent on passenger services, the railways suffers a loss of 55 paise. He added that the national transporter tries to make up for the losses by running freight services, and from other sources.

Danve sought to credit PM Modi for the running of passenger trains in India saying that the Modi government does not work for profit, and the PM says these services have to be operated for the convenience of people.

The minister made the comments while flagging off a weekly special train from Jalna to Chhapra Junction in Bihar on 26 October 2022.
