Palghar, Aug 27 (PTI) — A tragic incident occurred in Vasai, Maharashtra’s Palghar district, as a section of a building collapsed, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to nine others. The unfortunate event took place late Wednesday night, confirmed an official source.

The victims with injuries have been transported to hospitals in Virar and Nalasopara, located on Mumbai’s outskirts. The collapse involved the rear portion of the four-storey Ramabai Apartment on Narangi Road, which fell onto a nearby chawl around 12:05 am, reported the official from the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC).

Rescue teams have successfully extracted 11 individuals from the debris, with some sustaining serious injuries. Two of these individuals were later pronounced dead.

The fire department and two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units promptly arrived at the collapse site to manage the situation, stated the official.

According to preliminary information shared by Vivekanand Kadam, District Disaster Management Officer for Palghar, the rear section of Ramabai Apartment collapsed onto the adjacent chawl, entrapping multiple residents under the rubble.

“Regrettably, Aarohi Omkar Jovil, age 24, and Utkarsha Jovil, age 1, were discovered unresponsive beneath the debris and were declared deceased upon hospital arrival,” informed Kadam.

The focus remains on ensuring there are no further casualties under the debris. Search operations are ongoing with advanced equipment and skilled rescue personnel, Kadam added.

A temporary barricade has been erected to control the crowd and aid ongoing rescue efforts. Structural engineers are also evaluating the remaining sections of the building for potential risks.

“Collaborations with municipal authorities are underway to assess the structural integrity of nearby buildings and investigate the collapse’s cause. As a precaution, residents from adjacent buildings have been temporarily evacuated,” said Kadam.
