Opposition Demands Special Parliament Session on Operation Sindoor

New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI) Leaders from 16 opposition parties in India have intensified their demand for a special session of Parliament regarding Operation Sindoor, as indicated in a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The INDIA bloc convened in the national capital on Tuesday to address the issue. Leaders from notable parties such as the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party, and Shiv Sena (UTB) participated in the session. Members of Parliament from the INDIA bloc have endorsed a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, highlighting their plea for a special parliamentary session, officials from the opposition stated. Distinguished attendees included Congress' Jairam Ramesh and Deependra Hooda, TMC's Derek O'Brien, SP's Ramgopal Yadav, RJD's Manoj Jha, and Shiv Sena (UTB)'s Sanjay Raut. Although the DMK is a signatory, they were unable to attend due to the concurrence with Karunanidhi's birth anniversary celebrations. Additional notable signatories comprise National Conference, CPI(M), IUML, CPI, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Kerala Congress, MDMK, and CPI(ML) Liberation. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not attend the meeting, they plan to draft a separate letter to the Prime Minister echoing the same demand. Notably absent from the call for a special session is the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The demand amongst various opposition factions for a parliamentary session intensified following the Pahalgam terror attack, and has been reiterated in previous multi-party consultations addressing Operation Sindoor. Trinamool Congress has proposed conducting the session in June, post the return of multi-party delegations currently abroad communicating India's strong anti-terrorism stance. Operation Sindoor represents India's proactive military reaction to the tragic April 22 incident in Pahalgam, Kashmir, resulting in 26 fatalities, predominantly tourists. Under Operation Sindoor, Indian armed forces targeted and decimated terror camps within Pakistan and PoK, subsequently attacking airbases in the neighboring nation.
