Kishtwar operation enters second day, gunfire continues

The tense atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district continued as gunfire and explosions echoed through the Bhagna forest, signaling the second day of an operation to eliminate terrorists. The authorities indicated that the terrorists are likely hiding in a cave situated on a cliff within the forested Dool area, roughly 25 kilometers from Kishtwar town.

The mission commenced early Sunday following credible intelligence regarding the presence of two of Hizbul Mujahideen's most wanted members—Riyaz Ahmad and Mudassar Hazari. Both have been active in the district for about eight years and carry a bounty of Rs 10 lakh each.

Hostilities began when the concealed terrorists opened fire on the advancing search units at around 6:30 am on Sunday, retreating deeper into the forest amid a counter-response. Intermittent gunfire exchanges occurred twice more during the day.

The operation received a boost with additional reinforcements. These included army personnel, para commandos, police, and CRPF forces, along with drone surveillance to ensure the containment of the suspects. By Sunday evening, security forces suspected the terrorists had taken refuge in a deep cave after the last reported shots were heard from that location.

Powerful detonations and sporadic gunfire continued throughout the night. The operation remains active, and further updates are anticipated.
