Omar Abdullah Lauds Indian Women's Cricket World Cup Triumph

Jammu, Nov 3 (PTI) — Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday extended his congratulations to the Indian women's cricket team for their historic victory in the ICC World Cup. The team, demonstrating immense courage, secured its first-ever World Cup triumph with a 52-run win over South Africa in the thrilling final held in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

"My congratulations to them. This is a moment of pride for the entire nation," remarked Abdullah, known for his passion for cricket, while speaking to reporters at the Civil Secretariat, the administrative hub of Jammu and Kashmir.

He added, "When the tournament commenced, few foresaw such an outcome. However, the team displayed great determination, overcoming tough challenges including a particularly gripping semi-final against Australia where they chased a formidable target.

This victory signifies a shift, emphasizing the importance of equitable treatment in terms of salaries and perks for players, a stance the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been diligently addressing," Abdullah pointed out. Previously, disparities in compensation were stark between the men's and women's teams.

He confidently stated, "I believe that beating this team will now be a formidable challenge." Jubilation swept through Jammu as youths celebrated the women's team's World Cup victory with firecrackers and chants.
