Bhubaneswar, Aug 29 (PTI) - Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the National Conference of Scheduled Castes and Tribes Welfare Committees of Parliament and State/Union Territories Legislatures on Friday. The event took place in the presence of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, alongside Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, and the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Welfare of SC and ST, Faggan Singh Kulaste.

Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy, along with about 200 delegates representing various parts of the country, including chairmen and members of such committees from Parliament and 19 states, participated in the conference. The primary focus of this two-day gathering is to reinforce constitutional safeguards, boost socio-economic development, and exchange best practices aimed at empowering Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

The conference is centered around the theme "Role of Parliamentary and Legislature Committees on Welfare, Development and Empowerment of SCs and STs." In a post on X, Birla expressed his enthusiasm upon arriving in Bhubaneswar. He stated, "I am delighted to have arrived in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, for the National Conference of the chairpersons of the Committees on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Parliament and State Legislatures. I met the Hon'ble Governor Shri @DrHariBabuK ji at the State Raj Bhavan, and we discussed various subjects."
