No data on farmers' deaths, no question of compensation: Minister Narendra Tomar

The government has said that there is "no record" of the deaths of the farmers who were protesting the three contentious laws over the last one year.

In a written reply in Parliament, Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar said that his ministry has "no record in the matter, and hence the question of compensation does not arise."

The minister was questioned by the opposition on the data, and if the government is planning to give financial relief to the affected families.

Farmers bodies have claimed that more than 700 farmers have died during the protests and have been demanding compensation for the families. Opposition has also been raising the demand for compensation for farmers deaths.

The contentious farms laws were repealed on Monday in parliament in one of the fastest repeals the country has recently seen.

While the government is trying to convince farmers to call off their agitation, the protesting farmers' groups are pressuring the Centre for a legal backing for MSP for their crops.
