Vizianagaram Terror Case Transferred to NIA Amid Ongoing Investigation

Vizianagaram (Andhra Pradesh), July 7 (PTI) - The investigation into the Vizianagaram terror case is being transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), with necessary formalities for the handover currently in progress, according to a police statement on Monday.

The Andhra Pradesh Police, in collaboration with their Telangana counterparts, conducted a joint operation on May 17, resulting in the arrest of Siraj Ur Rehman, aged 29, and Syed Sameer, aged 28. The two are accused of planning to execute bomb blasts in Vizianagaram and other parts of the state.

Rehman, a resident of Vizianagaram, was apprehended following a tip-off, and during a subsequent search of his premises, authorities seized explosives such as ammonia, sulfur, and aluminum powder.

Throughout the investigation, Rehman provided information that led to the detention of Sameer in Hyderabad.

Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police, Vakul Jindal, informed PTI that all necessary formalities are expected to be finalized today, post which the case will be formally transferred to the NIA's Visakhapatnam branch for further investigation.

Following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Director General of Police (DGP) received formal communication from the NIA, and subsequently instructed Jindal on Friday to commence the handover process.

Police in possession of explosives, including some pipes with Rehman, alleged to be intended for crafting an explosive device.

Authorities confirmed that both individuals are currently in judicial custody at Visakhapatnam Central Jail.
