Persistent Landslides Disrupt NH10: Traffic Chaos between Sikkim and West Bengal

Gangtok, Jun 24 (PTI) – Heavy and incessant rains over the past few days have triggered several landslides along National Highway 10, severely affecting traffic movement between Sikkim and West Bengal. Officials reported the disruptions on Tuesday.

The 52-km highway stretch connecting Sevoke in West Bengal and Rangpo in Sikkim has faced numerous roadblocks, causing significant inconvenience to travelers. The blocked areas include 29 Mile, Kali Jhora, Seti Jhora, Selfie Dara, Birik Dara, Likhuveer, Melli, and Bhalu Khola, all located in West Bengal's Kalimpong district.

The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has initiated operations to clear debris and restore road access. Heavy machinery has been deployed to manage the situation caused by multiple landslides. "One-way traffic movement has commenced in certain areas, but traffic jams remain common due to ongoing landslides," an official said. "Efforts to clear the debris are being carried out on a war footing."

Kalimpong district police have been engaged to regulate traffic flow. They have advised commuters to plan their journeys considering the prevailing ground conditions.
