Rats Bite Newborns in ICU at Indore Hospital; Probe Ordered

Indore, Sep 2 (PTI): In a distressing incident at Maharaja Yashwantrao Chikitsalaya (MYH) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, two newborn babies were bitten by rats within the past 48 hours, leading to an investigation order by the administration on Tuesday.

MYH, recognized as one of the state's largest government hospitals, was the scene of these unfortunate events. The hospital's superintendent, Dr. Ashok Yadav, revealed that the incidents occurred in the intensive care unit (ICU), where one infant suffered bites to the fingers, while another was bitten on the head and shoulder. These newborns were already dealing with congenital deformities, with one child having been abandoned in the Khargone district before being admitted to MYH for necessary treatment.

Dr. Yadav emphasized that a special committee is being set up to thoroughly investigate these occurrences. He assured that hospital employees have been instructed to maintain a 24-hour watch to prevent such incidents in the future.

In an effort to improve safety, strong iron nets are being installed on hospital windows, and patient attendants have been advised against bringing food items into the wards.

The incident has sparked political outrage, with the Opposition Congress criticizing the state government and calling for a judicial inquiry. State Congress spokesperson Neelabh Shukla expressed that the occurrence not only reflects administrative negligence but also embodies a horrific event impacting human sensibilities.

"There should be a judicial inquiry into this incident, and strict action should be taken against the culprits," Shukla stated. He further remarked that the incidents have instilled fear and insecurity among parents, stressing that if the government cannot ensure the safety of newborns in a hospital, expecting safety for the general public seems implausible.
