'New clothes' ready for Amritpal Singh: will NSA detainee get bail or take MP oath under police cover?

Incarcerated under the stringent National Security Act, which allows the detention of individuals for up to 12 months without pressing formal charges, Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh have moved a court in Assam seeking to attend the upcoming Lok Sabha session, so that he can take oath as a member of the lower house of the Parliament.

Amritpal's parents and his wife have been campaigning in Dibrugarh since the news of the Sikh preacher, who has openly expressed his sympathies with Khalistan groups, winning the Lok Sabha election from Khadoor Sahib in Punjab trickled on June 4.

Photos on the internet showed Amritpal's parents distributing sweets among the prison staff and guards to celebrate their son’s victory.

His mother Balwinder Kaur said that she brought a new set of clothes and shoes for her son which he will 'need for his oath taking as a MP'.

While his family moved a plea for his temporary release for the oath taking ceremony, Amritpal will only be released after the approval of the District Magistrate and the jail authorities.

The 'Waris Punjab de' chief who is in jail since March 2023 won by 1,97,120 votes as an independent candidate by defeating Congress' Kulbir Singh Zira.
