In the first instance, a Kolkata man has been diagnosed with a fungal disease that typically affects plants, NDTV reported.&nbsp;
The patient, 61, whose name has been withheld is a Kolkata-based plant mycologist. Experts following the case has highlighted that maintaining a close contact with plant fungi can spread in humans too.&nbsp;
A research study by Dr. Soma Dutta and Dr. Ujjwayini Ray of the Consultant Apollo Multispecialty Hospitals, Kolkata, study published in the 'journal Medical Mycology Case Report' said that the man was admitted in city hospital after suffering from hoarse voice, fatigue and difficulties swallowing for three months. Interestingly, he had no medical history of HIV infection, diabetes or any other chronic disease.
However, the patient was involved with decayed material, mushrooms and various plant fungi for his research.&nbsp;
The experts in the study have revealed that Chondrostereum purpureum, a plant fungus that causes silver leaf disease in plants, infected the man. Conventional techniques like microscopy and culture failed to identify the fungus. Exposure to the decaying material may be responsible to cause this rare infection."
&nbsp;The patient is said to be normal after two years of treatment and there is no evidence of recurrence. as per the research report.

US' Georgia Assembly has passed a resolution condemning Hinduphobia, making it the first American state to take such a legislative measure.
Condemning Hinduphobia and anti-Hindu bigotry, the resolution said Hinduism is one of the world's largest and oldest religions with over 1.2 billion adherents in over 100 countries and encompasses an array of diverse traditions and belief systems with values of acceptance, mutual respect and peace.
The resolution was introduced by representatives Lauren McDonald and Todd Jones from Forsyth County in the suburbs of Atlanta, home to one of the largest Hindu and Indian-American communities in Georgia.&nbsp;
Stating that there have been documented instances of hate crimes against Hindu-Americans over the last few decades in many parts of the country, the resolution said Hinduphobia is exacerbated and institutionalised by some in academia who support the dismantling of Hinduism and accuse its sacred texts and cultural practices of violence and oppression.

This comes after protests by students on the campus demanding action against the professor.
Meanwhile, state women&rsquo;s commission chairperson AS Kumari who visited the campus on 31 March said that she has received nearly 100 written complaints of sexual abuse and harassment from students.
The Kalakshetra students, who have been protesting against Hari Padman and three other faculty members, have temporarily suspended their protest.
Hari Padman, who was accused of sexual harassment, was booked under Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. He was also booked under relevant Sections of the Women Harassment Act.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken to West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose and taken stock of the situation in the state where violence broke out between two groups when a Ram Navami procession was taken out in Howrah city on Thursday evening, top sources said on Friday.
In the telephonic conversation with Bose, the Home Minister took detailed information of the incident that led to violence in Howrah city, where several vehicles were torched and shops were ransacked on Thursday evening.
Shah took information about the current situation in the city during a conversation with the West Bengal Governor. State Police has said a number of people were detained in this connection with the violence that reportedly erupted when the Ram Navami procession was passing through the Kazipara locality in Howrah city.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has assured strict action against the perpetrators of the violence and said that the use of unauthorised routes led to the clash.

Maharashtra reported a 63 percent jump in its daily Covid-19 cases with 694 new infections, the highest since October last year.
According to a state health department bulletin, no Covid-related deaths were reported in a day. The fatality rate stands at 1.82 percent in the state.
Amid concerns over a fresh spike of Covid cases and H3N2 influenza cases in the country, India saw over a 40 percent rise in the daily tally with 3,016 new infections in the last 24 hours on Thursday - the highest daily in nearly six months.&nbsp;

Some of the steps being taken by Beijing along the India-China border have been provocative, a top White House official has said while reiterating that the United States is destined to work more closely with New Delhi Kurt Campbell, the Deputy Assistant to the US President and Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific, told a Washington-based think-tank that India is not an ally of the United States and will never be so.
"But it does not mean that we will not be close partners and share many things. That's how we need to understand the role that India will play as a great nation on the global stage.
"We want to encourage that and support that and deepen this relationship, which is already very strong, probably the strongest people-to-people relationship of any country that the United States has on the global stage," he said.
The think tank -- Centre for a New American Security -- in a report said that the India-China border intrusions and clashes have become more frequent and threaten to lead to all-out conflict.
The increased prospect of India-China border hostility has implications for the United States and its Indo-Pacific strategy between the two Asian giants, it said.
The report said that Indian officials believe China is trying to contain India by forcing it to divert more resources into defending simultaneously both its western border with Pakistan and eastern flank with China and by weakening its willingness and ability to challenge Chinese ambitions to dominate the region.
Campbell told the think-tank, "Some of the steps that China has taken along this vast 5,000-mile border had been provocative and deeply concerning to Indian partners and friends." The think tank's report, authored by Lisa Curtis and Derek Grossman, has made several recommendations to help deter and respond to further Chinese aggression along the border with India.

The slab constructed on top of an ancient 'bawdi' or stepwell had collapsed during a 'havan' programme held on the occasion of Ram Navami at the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal Temple located in Patel Nagar area here on Thursday.

A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was registered on Friday against two members of the trust of the Indore temple where a floor cave-in a day earlier hurtled devotees into a stepwell, killing 36 persons, a police official said.

Amid a spike in coronavirus cases in some countries, the government has sounded an alert, tightened Covid guidelines and asked states and Union territories to prepare for any eventuality.

Passengers arriving in India from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand will be mandatorily required to provide negative Covid reports from January 1, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Thursday.
They will have to upload the negative Covid reports from RT-PCR tests on the Air Suvidha portal prior to their departure.
The tests have to be conducted within 72 hours of undertaking the journey to India, Mandaviya said.
This requirement is in addition to the random two per cent tests of all international passengers in all incoming international flights on their arrival in India irrespective of their port of departure, the minister said.

A 63-year-old Swedish national was arrested in Mumbai on 30 March for allegedly molesting a cabin crew member while drunk on an IndiGo flight from Bangkok, news agency ANI reported on 1 April.
IndiGo had filed a complaint against the flier saying he was drunk and touched a crew member inappropriately while he was making the payment for the food purchase.

A person has been detained in Pune pertaining to a threat message to Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, ANI reported.
Raut on 1 April filed a police complaint claiming that he received a death threat allegedly from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang on 31 March.
The accused in the abusive threat message mentioned murdering Sanjay Raut like Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala in Delhi, calling him anti-Hindu, Raut said in his complaint.&nbsp;

The renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art in United States will return 15 sculptures to India after it was learnt that the antiquities were illegally removed from the country and sold by disgraced dealer Subhash Kapoor.
In a statement on Thursday, the Met said it will transfer the 15 sculptures for return to the government of India. The works range in date from the 1st century BCE to the 11th century CE, and include terracotta, copper and stone.
All of the works were sold at one point by Subhash Kapoor, who is currently serving a prison sentence in India.
The value of the 15 Indian antiquities listed in the search warrant has been estimated as $1.201 million (nearly Rs 9.87 crore).
