15-Day-Old Baby Abandoned on Navi Mumbai Train by Mother

A mother abandoned her 15-day-old baby on a Navi Mumbai train by handing the child to passengers requesting help. She stayed on the train as they exited. After realizing the situation, they contacted police. Investigations led to CCTV identifying her exit at Khandeshwar station.

15-Day-Old Baby Abandoned on Navi Mumbai Train by Mother

Mumbai, Jul 2 (PTI) — In a startling incident, a 15-day-old baby was abandoned by its mother on a local train in Navi Mumbai. On a Wednesday statement, the police disclosed that the mother handed over her baby to two fellow passengers and then stayed onboard, leaving them to disembark with the child.

The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon. While traveling on the harbor line of the suburban train, the mother requested assistance from two female passengers, as she was managing both her baby and some baggage. The passengers, who intended to get off at Juinagar station, agreed to accompany her to Seawoods for support.

Upon reaching Seawoods, the helpful passengers got off the train, accepting the baby from the mother. However, instead of disembarking herself, the woman lingered by the door under the guise of gathering her belongings, only to remain aboard as the train continued its journey.

Initially, the passengers believed the woman would return for her baby from the next station. When she failed to do so, they approached the police, narrating the entire episode. The concerned officials transferred the case to the Vashi railway police, who are now actively searching for the mother.

A case has been filed against the woman under section 93 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with the exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years of age. Analysis of CCTV footage revealed that the woman alighted at Khandeshwar railway station, five stops beyond Seawoods.

Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated one. Just last week, Panvel Town police discovered a three-day-old baby abandoned in a basket on a roadside in Takka Colony. A note accompanying the child expressed the parents' inability to care for the baby due to financial hardships.

The Navi Mumbai police's crime branch swiftly traced and detained the infant's father from Bhiwandi, Thane, within a day. Subsequent investigations indicated that the child was born to an unwed mother. As a result, the parents had initially planned to leave her at an orphanage in Panvel.
