Navi Mumbai Student's Suicide Sparks Investigation into Caste-Based Discrimination

Thane, Jun 11 (PTI): A 19-year-old nursing student from Navi Mumbai tragically ended his life, allegedly driven by caste-based discrimination and humiliation from the female principal of his college, police reported on Wednesday.

An FIR for abetment of suicide was filed against the principal on Tuesday, following a complaint from the student’s mother. The incident occurred on June 3 at a private college in Poyange village, Panvel, Navi Mumbai.

The student, a member of the Scheduled Caste community, hailed from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, and was in his first year of the BSc Nursing course.

He reportedly hanged himself using a waistband from a window grill in his hostel room on June 3, as per a Panvel Taluka police official.

According to the FIR, the principal allegedly subjected the student to casteist remarks, public humiliation, and derogatory comments regarding his masculinity over recent months.

Faced with this mental turmoil, the student felt compelled to take his own life.

On Tuesday, police filed an FIR against the principal based on the mother’s complaint. The charges include section 108 (abetment of suicide) and 352(1) (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as stated by the officials.

No arrests have been made yet.

The investigation is ongoing, with police recording statements from witnesses and college staff and gathering evidence.
