Mumbai Woman Loses Rs 8 Lakh in Rare Currency Fraud

Mumbai, August 6 (PTI) - In a shocking case of online fraud, a 49-year-old Mumbai woman, residing in Mazgaon, was deceived out of Rs 8 lakh. The woman, an avid collector of old coins and currency notes, fell victim to a scam promising hefty returns for rare items. She was lured by an advertisement on Facebook that offered Rs 6 lakh each for a Rs 100 note bearing the '786' serial number and a 25 paise coin featuring a rhinoceros.

After contacting the advertiser, the woman was assured of attractive payouts for the rare pieces. However, she was asked to pay registration fees, GST, and other charges supposedly as per regulations. Believing the convincing ploy, she deposited over Rs 8.4 lakh into various bank accounts as instructed by the fraudsters.

Realizing her predicament, she promptly approached the Mumbai police on Monday. A case has been filed against the unidentified scammers under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. Investigations are currently underway.
