Mumbai Tree Collapse: Deadly Incidents Amid Rain

Mumbai, May 27: A spell of rain over the past 24 hours has led to tragic incidents in the city involving tree collapses, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to another, according to the civic body’s report on Tuesday morning.

Tejas Naik, aged 26, suffered fatal injuries when a tree fell on him near Ganesh Maidan in Vikhroli’s Kannamwar Nagar around 8 pm on Monday. He was promptly taken to Godrej Hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival, officials reported.

The tree responsible for the accident had been trimmed beforehand in preparation for the monsoon, as stated in the garden department’s report. However, the roots of the tree had deteriorated, leading to its collapse.

Earlier on the same day, another incident occurred involving Sairaj Pawar, 24, who was injured when a tree branch struck him near St Xavier's College in South Mumbai around 1:30 pm. He was swiftly admitted to St George Hospital, where he is stable, according to the hospital’s report.

Mumbai saw a total of 70 incidents involving trees or branches falling on Monday alone. The island city recorded the highest number of occurrences, with 46 incidents and an average of 106 mm of rainfall. The Western suburbs accounted for 17 incidents, while the Eastern suburbs reported seven.

Additionally, in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Tuesday, the city reported 53 short circuit incidents and 12 cases involving house or wall collapses. Fortunately, these incidents did not result in any injuries.
