PM Modi claimed past neglect of semiconductors; Congress highlighted 1983 efforts to counter. First Indian-made chip launching soon.

Congress Responds to PM Modi's Claims on Semiconductor Industry

New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) — The Congress has responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks where he accused past governments of neglecting the semiconductor sector, indicating that the "foeticide" of this idea occurred 50-60 years ago. The Congress countered this claim by highlighting that the Semiconductors Complex Limited in Chandigarh began its operations in 1983.

While addressing the nation on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, Modi announced that the first made-in-India semiconductor chip is slated for launch by the end of this year. "About 50-60 years ago, files on semiconductors were opened, and discussions on having a factory began. But my youths, you will be surprised that the semiconductor, which has become the strength of the world, that thought process, faced foeticide 50-60 years ago," the Prime Minister stated.

Modi clarified that while he was not at the Red Fort to criticize previous governments, it was crucial for the youth to be informed about past decisions. In response, Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, fired back, saying, "One more example of what a pathological liar Mr. Modi is. Semiconductors Complex Ltd, established in Chandigarh, started operations in 1983."

Modi added that India has now shed the burdens of past lapses and is advancing in the semiconductor domain in a mission-driven manner.
