Five states are going to polls with voting beginning on February 10 and ending on March 7. Results will be announced on March 10.

A committee to discuss the demand for a law ensuring minimum support price was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021. The announcement was made after PM Modi said that the three farm laws which had sparked a year-long protest would be revoked.

Tomar said that since the model code of conduct is in place due to polls, the government had consulted the Election Commission on whether it was allowed to constitute the committee.

Recently, farm unions under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha had observed January 31 as 'Vishwasghat Diwas', or Day of Betrayal. They had reportedly threatened to renew their agitation if their demands were not met by the government.
