Modi govt contradicts Amit Shah? 2 years after HM's 'pan-India NRC' remark, govt says 'no decision' yet

"NRC procedure will be conducted across the nation" - around two years after India's Home Minister said this on the floor of the Parliament, the Union government has said that it has not taken any such decision yet.

On March 15, the Modi government answered a question in Parliament regarding the National Register of Citizens. Mala Roy had asked the government what "the status of having a National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the entire country" is.

Amit Shah's colleague in the Home Ministry Nityanand Rai answered, "Till now, the Government has not taken any decision to prepare National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC) at the National level."

Regarding a subsequent question on the NRC exercise in the state of Assam, the minister said, "On the direction of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, the supplementary list of inclusions and the list of exclusions for NRC, Assam have been published on 31st August, 2019."

Before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, the CAA-NRC issue had sparked widespread protests in India. Critics of the Modi government had claimed that the National Register of Citizens, in conjunction with the Citizenship Amendment Act, would deprive many Indian Muslims of their citizenship. The government had rubbished all such allegations.
