Mobile Phone Seized from Kannur Jail Inmate, Case Lodged

Kannur, Aug 28 (PTI) A case has been lodged against an inmate at Kannur Central Jail following the seizure of a mobile phone from his possession, according to police reports on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Dinesh U T, 25, hailing from Ollukara, Thrissur, is currently serving a sentence at the jail after being convicted in a criminal case.

The FIR, filed on August 27, indicates that jail authorities conducted a search early Tuesday morning in the new block of Central Jail. During this search, a Chinese-made mobile phone with a SIM card was found on Dinesh.

Upon this discovery, jail authorities filed a complaint with the police.

The FIR was registered under Section 86(2) of the Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services (Management) Act, for possessing prohibited electronic communication equipment inside the jail.

Officials from the Kannur Town police station stated that they would soon interrogate Dinesh to ascertain how the phone was smuggled into the jail.

Last month, Govindachamy, who was convicted for the 2011 rape and murder of 23-year-old Soumya on a train journey from Ernakulam to Shornur, managed an escape from the very same jail.

Furthermore, just last week, jail authorities intercepted three individuals who were allegedly attempting to throw mobile phones and tobacco products over the compound wall of the jail, a police official mentioned.
