Mizoram Boosts Crime Investigation with 10 Mobile Forensic Units

Aizawl, Sep 2 (PTI) — Mizoram is set to bolster its crime investigation capabilities as Home Minister K Sapdanga launched 10 mobile forensic vehicles aimed at enhancing scientific crime investigation in the state. These vehicles, funded by the Centre at a cost of Rs. 4.8 crore, are fully equipped with the necessary forensic tools and equipment. Speaking during the launch, Sapdanga emphasized India’s prowess in forensic sciences, further highlighting the pivotal role forensics played post the 2012 Delhi gangrape 'Nirbhaya Case'. This tragic event underscored the critical need for scientific approaches in investigations. Since then, the country has prioritized strengthening forensic capabilities, with the Mizoram Forensic Science Laboratory at the forefront by adopting paperless casework, expedited examinations, and a case tracking system. According to officials, the new mobile forensic vehicles will enhance the effective enforcement of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023. This recent legislation emphasizes forensic examination in criminal law, mandating forensic expert certification in cases with potential punishment exceeding 7 years of imprisonment. The Centre has ensured the necessary infrastructure for state and UT Forensic Science Laboratories (FSLs), including advanced equipment and mobile forensic vehicles. Besides the 10 mobile forensic units, the Centre has allocated Rs 6.13 crore for 15 advanced equipment sets for Mizoram.
